[Canceled] Community based MMORPG project (Shrapnel3D Entertainment)

Hi, my name is Daniel and I am attempting to create a heavily community based project.

This project is an MMORPG designed to be constantly changing as such it shouldn't easily get boring. If the community doesn't like something then It would likely be removed if the community wants something it will be added or a reason will be given for why it can’t or shouldn't be added.

This project can only be completed with the communities help

 

 

 

 

What we need urgently (In order):

  • A NAME! We really need a name for this project if I don’t find a name soon, there will likely be a contest on the website
  • Someone (or a group) to manage and upgrade the website (I have temporally disabled posts due to a large amount of spam)
  • Donations (I would use kickstarter however that is not possible at this time)

What we need that isn't so urgent:

 

  • A new logo for Shrapnel3D Entertainment (I will likely run a competition on the website)
  • A better website would be nice but is not currently required (Something to do when you’re bored? You will likely have to work with the person who manages the website and/or become that person)
  • A Music team
  • An Art team
  • Feedback (We love feedback! Especially positive feedback!)
  • Quests (Quests are an important part of any good game, we need good interesting quests with a good lore behind it)

 

 

Alpha and Closed Beta:

If the project reaches this stage then most contributors will likely be given at least 3 copies to use and/or give away, however this depends greatly on the situation at the time.

 

 

 

 

Contributions, Compensation:

There will likely be compensations if this project gains an income, If you wish to be compensated for your contributions there will be a form/email template to fill out to send with your contribution/s. Compensation will be based on what and how much you do.

 

 

 

Jobs:

Shrapnel3D Entertainment does not currently have an income so there are no paid jobs available at this time, however if you contribute you will be the first to know and may be directly offered a job based on what you did.

This sounds a lot like a recruitment post, which belongs in the Classifieds section.

 

Before this topic gets locked though, (and since you said you loved feedback) I just want to suggest that you read the appropriately titled "Going to post your game idea? Read this first" post that's pinned at the top of this forum.

Specifically, since its a long post, the section at the top, that begins with:

1. Don’t post your new game idea if it is a MMORPG, unless your idea is purely theoretical, in which case it should be made abundantly clear at the very start.

There's good explanation there as to why, which I think you could perhaps benefit from reading. Not saying that MMOs by small dev teams are impossible, but they require a ton of work more than almost any other game, and also a ton of experienced developers (which usually don't come cheap, or easy to find).

 

My advice is just to reconsider making an mmo unless you already have a pretty experienced team (not just looking for one), are quite experienced yourself, and have a good funding source lined up (i.e. an investor - kickstarter and the like don't count imo).

I agree with Milcho. Since this project obviously hasn't gone anywhere, try to have a community made game that is more manageable, like a small linear 3D game.


C dominates the world of linear procedural computing, which won't advance. The future lies in MASSIVE parallelism.

@Milcho This isn't a recruitment and I did read it but there wasn't anywhere else I could think to put it, and as far as i know those aren't rules but guidelines. Also I know its a big project my time estimate for it to be fully released is 8-10 years due to it being a community project. If you have any better places I can put this it would be greatly appreciated.

1) It is highly unlikely to have a single project go on for 8-10 years. In fact, your life will change in just 2-3 years and even you will move on. Have you ever done anything consistently for the last 2-3 years?

2) Technology change rapidly. Whatever 3D engine/tools you are using will get outdated multiple times in those 8-10 years.

3) Before you even start making quests, lore, art or music, you should start making prototypes and tech demos for your multiplayer networking and 3D engine. Everything crucially relies on the technology you are using. Both story/game design and development/programming are deeply intertwined and will rely heavily on each other.

If it is not a recruitment based post - What is it then? The only thing I could find remotely related was the need for a name -- which to be honest is way to early to even really think about something such as this so early in the project.

 

Your 2 website links direct me to Gaming Community forums and some "iffy" ad service download site which wants to give me something that I aint touching without more information.

 

What is that you are seeking in the Game Design forum in terms of feedback? Though take into account what Legendre said as it is relevant.

1. This isn't the sort of thing you just ditch also Guild Wars 2 took 5 years I believe

 

2. World of Warcraft was released in 2004 that's 8 years its been around and who knows how long it was in development that whole time its been using for the most part the same graphics engine as far as I know. Also I was planing to use the latest in graphic engine technology which is currently still in development so when we get to that part the engine should be ready.

 

3. You make a very valid point, I think I skipped too many steps. I should go back to step one and maybe start smaller.

 

 

@Stormynature You also make a valid point I guess it is a recruitment based post as for the link with the add, there's a skip add button at the top right (It doesn't download anything)

You shouldn't compare your first game project, which is an unfunded hobby project, to full blown triple A game development projects that has millions of dollars in funding.

For example, if you have millions of dollars in funding and is contractually obliged to pay programmers and artists wages over a 5 year period, or if your game is making hundreds of millions of dollars every year, then it *might* be realistic to estimate a 5 year long project. (8-10 years is still quite unrealistic and usually called "development hell")
