I need help choosing a Game engine that can handle an open world similar to skyrim. It needs to be free This is a project that I am taking up on my free time and I'm completely broke. But  right now I am fooling around with UDK but from the tutorials i have seen I am not sure it can handle an open world map. I have heard unity3D can but im not sure can anyone help me out.

Since you're asking about engines, this doesn't belong in Game Design. Moving to For Beginners.

Torque 3D is absolutely free under the MIT license. It does require that you are up for some programming though. Go to github or garagegames.com for a free download and see one of the finest engines ever(according to me smile.png ).

Well, here is a list of most modern 3D engines in use and details of each such as platforms support, language used, example games made, cost, etc...

Without know more details it's hard to give much more advice.

The broke part narrows it down quite a bit, but what programming languages are you most comfortable with?  What tools are your designers/artists using for content creation?  How many concurrent players or none at all?  Etc...

For the record, if you cant answer the above question about art asset creation, you are WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY too far way from creating a Skyrim-esque game.

Great list biggrin.png  plus one for you Serapth, but... Torque 3D no longer costs 179$, it now cost zero $ and is free under the MIT license. Regarding books, then two new useful books have seen the daylight:

  • 3D game programming all in one third edition, Kenneth C. Finney
  • Torque 3D game development cookbook, David Wyard

I sure hope the other information about other game engines are more up to date.... blink.png

Yeah, I really need to update that entry.  The problem is it's a "page" in the blogs chronology as opposed to a post, and for some reason my blogging software simply wont find it, making editing some posts a right pain in the @$@#$.

But yeah, Torque is now free and open source, which is certainly an upside!

Their 2D engine was also recently open sourced, although the tools havent been yet ( or hadn't last i checked ).
