So I've been working on a few bits and bobs recently, and I've not really had much feedback about it, so was wondering if you guys could offer some? https://soundcloud.com/infreaquent/sets/snippets - I know it's 20 minutes of music but just any constructive feedback would be good. Just gave this a listen, and have to say I was impressed. A lot of those tracks were really well done and I could see them being used in many genres of games with a retro art style. Of the set my favourite was probably Silly. It reminds me a bit of music found in the .hack// games on PS2. The only one I didn't much care for was the last one, but as it was a noise experiment it's of little relevance to me anyway.

 

All said, good works of a generally consistent quality. Keep it up!

Thanks a lot! Yep, I enjoyed writing Silly the most as well. It's supposed to be a Bollywood-chiptune-classic RPG crossover. What I'm having trouble with is making the pieces more 'satisfying' - creating more harmonic/melodic/textural variety etc.

 

I'm good at teaching this sort of thing but when it comes to actually doing it I find myself getting too distracted/things taking too long.

Jack, I never expect much when I listen to someone's work, but you are an amazing composer. I'm truly impressed.
"Silly" is my favourite. It's beatiful.

what do you use for the "old fashion" sounds?

Your sound design isn't that bad at all. For "YT Promo Ideas", I think the strings sound a little MIDI'ish. Other than that, the only gripe I have in general is the volume; maybe use a little bit more compression/limiting next time?

I scanned through and liked pretty much all of it.  I can't really muster any helpful critique, other that your dubstep style wobbles aren't filthy enough =p

Haha thanks Ollie, actually the problem with that track was the wobble was too filthy, it was meant to be more of an 'ambient' wobble but I lost patience!

 

Methropoly - I don't know what you mean by old-fashioned sounds... there's a tape recorded accordion (no idea where I found the samples), some 8-bit noises courtesy of tweakbench, other than that everything is the standard kontakt library fare.

 

Python - "not that bad at all" - what a complement! Haha, yep I'm still working on realistic string programming but I've found that focussing too much on the realism side of things tends to stop me from coming up with new ideas and developing them into longer pieces. Compression is a matter of taste I suppose, I try to use as few effects as subtly as possible while I'm composing so that I can mess with things once all the ideas are down (all those tracks are unfinished). I'm classically trained so I guess I'm more accustomed to wider variations in volume. By the way I had an explore round your Bandcamp page - love the soundscapes you've created.

I was only kidding anyway =p  Try time stretching the wobble and reversing it.  That ought to sound weird and ambient?
