http://www.gamedev.net/topic/640090-error-lnk2001/ - Note: There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking the question posed in this thread.

I think we should have a new forum. It should be called LNK2001. Why? Because it is by far the most asked question on this site. It's more FAQ than the FAQ. Use C++? You probably have gotten LNK2001. Use Java? You probably have gotten a LNK2001. Use Brainf*ck? Yeah, we know you got a LNK2001. Every error in the history of programming can be traced to LNK2001. So why not have a forum dedicated to it and its brethen?

GameDev faithful, let your voice be heard! Vote in the poll. Post in your support for the issues! Let those who have suffered in the labyrinth of LNK2001 be able to find the threads of debugging freedom!

IMO Google is sufficient.

That goes for a lot of questions being asked really

Google doesn't have convenience and coolness of a LNK2001 forum. All your questions to this family of errors will be in one place. Debugging glory at your fingertips. Google is just a wasteland of links that may or may not enlighten you. LNK2001 forum is where the developer goes to see that one can rise above despair.

The first link on Google (to MSDN) has a huge list of possible cases that can cause linker errors. I was pretty amazed.

Of course, if this ultimately happens, the first link in Google would point to this hypothetical LNK2001 forum, making the argument moot.

The slowsort algorithm is a perfect illustration of the multiply and surrender paradigm, which is perhaps the single most important paradigm in the development of reluctant algorithms. The basic multiply and surrender strategy consists in replacing the problem at hand by two or more subproblems, each slightly simpler than the original, and continue multiplying subproblems and subsubproblems recursively in this fashion as long as possible. At some point the subproblems will all become so simple that their solution can no longer be postponed, and we will have to surrender. Experience shows that, in most cases, by the time this point is reached the total work will be substantially higher than what could have been wasted by a more direct approach.

Actually what it would do is making Google the door way to Nirvana. So the forum itself would actually improve Google for the better.

Seeing as the people asking this question have failed to look it up on google first, I don't have high hopes that they'd be able to find the new appropriate forum to post in either tongue.png

Wouldn't a sticky in the "For Beginners" forum accomplish a similar task?

Please do not cloud the issue with logic.

Screw it, let's just rename "For Beginners" to "Unresolved External Symbol".

The prominence of LNK2001 can't be contained within one thread. Roads to LNK2001 are varied and many. So logically to try to pigeonhole the masses in one thread would cause for a cry for justice and true representation.

Here's an idea for this website: the first 10 times someone tries to create a thread, they are first prompted with a screen that says "Did you already google your problem/question?" (and if they click "Yes" and still want to create a thread, it can then prompt again and say "And you're sure your problem is unique/different enough to necessitate a new thread?").

If you say children, it sounds more emotional. Think of the children!

Oh how i so not regret going for .net and leaving the world of actually having to care about compilers linkers headers and the whole toolchain beside just using it transparently :)
