How about Kansas?

LA and SD can be quite expensive as well depending on what area you're looking at. Move to LA and I'll get you setup with BizSpark. ;)

Phoenix is pretty cheap to live right now. Plenty warm, too.

holy crap phoenix is cheap

a 1 bed for $370

Atlanta is a shithole, and has nothing in the way of useful game development communities or businesses. I'd recommend Austin.

Austin is a pretty hot bed for games right now. That and Seattle.

I don't know about rent, but Texas is very welcoming to Small Businesses right now, so you may want to check them out: http://www.texaswideopenforbusiness.com/small-business/

Good luck.

zoom, plz add me on Skype and we can discuss this. I am also a 3/4 full time indie dev and Ill be moving Stateside in June, and Ill be in San Fran for GDC in a week. I am going to open up a home that I am purchasing to other aspiring game devs and it might just fit your needs and give you some runway while attempting to go indie. There would be no rent payments and the other parts of the deal are negotiable.

I'm leaning heavily towards Austin right now, does anyone have any other suggestions?
