Alright Guys I have been scouring the internet for sometime now and I still have not been able to find ONE Tutorial on how to start out making your own 2D engine, or even simple games like Pong and it's source code that actually works. By the way I use Visual C++ 2010. I really love the feel of programming but the simple console applications aren't cutting it anymore. If you guys have any suggestion at all of where to find any GOOD Tutorials, by all means please go ahead and share all help help will be VERY much appreciated!

Thanks,

Going off of Alpha:

In the Latest Articles:

Tetris - Which is a game that comes highly recommended to start with.

2D Platformers - Information for creating a platformer.

I know the Tetris one tends to show up a lot on the home page.

I know enough to look at a language(programming) I don't even know the syntax of and be able to read it and see what its doing. Most of experience is in C++.

Did you try downloading the configured project for each part?  It's configured for you and has no external dependencies.

Truth is, linker problems are going to be one of your biggest fights with SFML.

If you're still thinking about SDL, there is a series of good tutorials at http://www.sdltutorials.com/

The tutorials on there will teach the basics of using SDL, such as rendering an image to the screen, receiving playing input, etc, as well as how to construct a game engine.

Well the thing is Ludus when I try to get it setup it doesn't work, there's always a linker error or a compiler error saying its missing some .ddl files. If you can a good legitimate tutorial on how to install SDL in Visual c++ 2010 that would be great, but as it looks now I think I'm going to be switching compilers even though I love the UI of Visual Studio. Also SFML is still not working.

Are you still getting the same error in VS while trying to compile SFML ? Have you looked at the link that I gave you?

For setting up SDL, I recommend Lazyfoo's tutorial: http://lazyfoo.net/SDL_tutorials/lesson01/index.php

Also, don't be discouraged by the setup process - this is often the most frustrating part of getting started, but it's (mostly) smooth sailing once you get everything working correctly.

Alright Guys i'm trying to setup SFML-2.0 right now and I think I got a whole lot of the bugs worked out but I still keep getting these errors:

main.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: static class sf::RenderStates const sf::RenderStates::Default" (?Default@RenderStates@sf@@2V12@B)

main.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "public: static class sf::Color const sf::Color::Green" (?Green@Color@sf@@2V12@B)

I'm not really sure of what to do, I google'd it and found a couple of possible solutions but none of them worked. Dang This sure is difficult, and i'm going to create a tutorial once I figure it out!

Could you paste your code?

I say that because it looks like a code error.

Although your library linking order might be wrong/not include the SFML graphics library.

I got this code from the tutorial page on SFML: http://www.sfml-dev.org/tutorials/2.0/start-vc.php

#include <SFML/Graphics.hpp>

int main()
{
    sf::RenderWindow window(sf::VideoMode(200, 200), "SFML works!");
    sf::CircleShape shape(100.f);
    shape.setFillColor(sf::Color::Green);

    while (window.isOpen())
    {
        sf::Event event;
        while (window.pollEvent(event))
        {
            if (event.type == sf::Event::Closed)
                window.close();
        }

        window.clear();
        window.draw(shape);
        window.display();
    }

    return 0;
}

I've Also uploaded Images to Photobucket so you can see what i've done:

Preprocessor(Release) should look like this: SFML_STATIC;WIN32;NDEBUG;_WINDOWS .....

You need to link the static libs. And for debug mode the debug libs. Try to remove the sfml libs from linker->input. and add this to your code file:

#ifdef _DEBUG
#pragma comment(lib, "sfml-system-s-d.lib")
#pragma comment(lib, "sfml-window-s-d.lib")
#pragma comment(lib, "sfml-graphics-s-d.lib")
#else
#pragma comment(lib, "sfml-system-s.lib")
#pragma comment(lib, "sfml-window-s.lib")
#pragma comment(lib, "sfml-graphics-s.lib")
#endif
