Hi to all,

 

great place to find tons of info here!

 

I have some thoughts about building games for the iOS platform (I have already a non-game app in the App Store) using the monogame toolkit. I admit that I do not have any graphics skills to build my own graphics and I am very skeptical to pay someone to build them for me, at least at start.

(main reason is that games in iOS rarely make the money in return)

 

I saw that there are sites on the internet (e.x.: http://www.frogames.net/content-packs.html ) that I can buy graphics like characters, terrains, weapons etc.

 

My question is: Can I create something decent (game) by following that route ? I mean, by paying to get the graphics that I will need, for simple games, and not mess with Photoshop and the like to create them ?

It depends what you are going for?

 

You can pay for assets from froggames, 3drt, open game art or the unity asset store (don't forget the gamedev market too ;)) and make a fairly successful indie game.  Your game probably wouldn't be the next big breakaway indie game without your own unique assets though.

 

That said there are several fairly successful indie games all using the same oryx sprite though http://oryxdesignlab.com/sprites/

 

 

I used to isist that I sucked at graphics and refused to even learn but, after sitting down with a decent book on blender I can now build some fairly convincing programmer art.  For 2d work you should also check out http://2dgameartforprogrammers.blogspot.co.uk/

You can use those art packages but you are extremely tied to an art style that was picked for you and might not be the one you are after. You can always put out an add in the GD.net section for an artist to make you some artwork. Make sure you mention this is not for payment but that they can list the experience on their CV or something, beginning artists and programmers often will do some stuff for you that way.

At first, thank you all!

 

@Buster2000: I am interested in 2D games, at first. Just to keep the complexity and the learning curve at lower levels. I discovered InkScape so i might give it a got to see how bad i am at this stuff

 

@NightCreature83: i will be tied to a style, yes. It seems to me that though, that i will need way more work to make something myself, and as i said, i suck in graphics!

I never suggested doing it yourself I suggested that you could find an artist to be who needs some portofolio work. Having a published title is a great boon when looking for a job in the industry, it doesnt matter whether that is on tripple A console or mobile phone. So find someone online who can make art work for free for you they are out there you know.

I understood completely what you said. But, I do not want someone else to do the work for me for free, even under the "terms" you describe. It's just me cool.png . So, either I start to gain graphics expertise myself or follow the other path (buy ready-made graphics).
