Okay so what game engine would be best for this. I have had a little look at generating heightmaps using Perlin noise. 

I am making a little project on the side and would love a starting point from someone who can kick me off in the right direction. 

 

Would this be possible in Unity 3D? Or would any of you suggest of any other Game engines that would be good for this. 

 

Also I have heard of planet terrain generation however have never seen anyone do a solar system generation.

 

Looking forward to hearing what you guy's think.

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but there's a Space Graphics Toolkit for Unity with quite a lot of features. With it you can create planets, stars, nebulae, dust fields, asteroid belts, startfields and more. Some of them are procedurally created.
