In 3D rendering (OpenGL specifically if that makes a difference), what's the difference between a perspective camera's focal length (denoted as e where e = 1 / tan(FoVAngle / 2) ) and the distance to the far plane F?
Focal length vs far plane distance

The field of view (directly related to the focal length) is the horizontal and vertical angle of the view volume, and the far clip plane is how far away you can see objects. The two are totally unrelated and you can change either one without affecting the other. The field of view is what you change when you, for example, zoom in on an object to get a closeup view of it from a distance.
