Just noticed that the Myst guys are running a kickstarer for a new game.  I've never pledged money before, but this may push me over the edge.

*edit* Just to be clear, they aren't making a new Myst game.  It's a new game with the Unreal 4 engine, just made by the same development team that made Myst.

Myst has been around forever. I never really have gotten into the game, but I have watched others play.

I think they will reach their funding goal. I've known developers of good games struggling to get that much money, but I don't think they will.

The original was a great game, and I have found a few interesting refreshing additions with some of the following installments, but I doubt they can capture the same kind of experience.

Part of the resounding success behind myst was that it relied on pre-rendered graphics which, at the time, were far ahead of their time (in a dynamic game).

The visual of myst became out-dated only in the very late 90s, and even then, it wasn't horrible to look at.

I think Myst was a niche game, made by "indies" (two brothers initially).

I totally agree.  There seems to be a big resurgence with a lot of older games being redone, and unless you played the original when it came out, the magic of the game may not be there.  I only posted the link because usually I seem to miss these kickstarer projects until they are already funded, and I thought I would spread the word.

Shadowrun was remade too, Im not sure if ppl liked it. Theyre successfully funded it.

I loved that game on the snes. (though I never played it on the snes, just on emulators ;D ).

The vids looks ok, not bad, but not impressive either. The snes version was real time, the new one is turn based..huge drop imo.

This is the first Kickstarter I've backed, despite being quite enthusiastic about a lot of them. I did this because if any genre needs a second chance, it's the Myst-likes. That, and massive nostalgia. But the point of Myst was never the particular characters, it was the exploration. They didn't show much in the Kickstarter, but they've made it pretty clear that we'll be given weird and wonderful worlds to traverse. That's all I want, and is half the reason I loved Fez which despite being a platformer has as much in common with Myst as with Mario.

For those who are saying that Myst is a niche game, reconsider your thoughts. It was, until 2002 when The Sims over took it, the best selling PC game of all time. It spawned 4 direct sequels and the URU-spinoffs. Myst was a massive force in the gaming world at the time and there were countless knockoffs of it made afterwards. I've played a lot of those knockoffs but most were varying degrees of bad. And oh god they were so inconsistently compatible with PCs back then: every one required the installation of bizarre software to play animations that had generally a 50/50 shot of working.

If you want a new Myst-like game, I think The Witness might achieve something enjoyable with a similar feel to it. It's led by the indie developer who made Braid back in 2008, and as a funny sidenote it and actually has one of Cyan World's ex-art directors working on it - though the art director was only involved with Myst V, and the Uru series.

It's not Myst, and it's not trying to recreate the Myst feel, but it seems like it'll share some similarities.

I've been following the Witness development for a while now.  Sure, can play that one, but you can't have too many games, not can you?

True that! This new game looks fun, I wish they'd post videos or screenshots of the current state of the game so we could get an idea of how far along it is.
