I was here in 2001 I think. (Being anonymous for a while though).

I remember the green slime advert.

Are we having a nostalgia-fest?  Here are some things I remember from long ago:

  • Sabreman talking about Lisp/dissing C++ wherever humanly possible
  • Someone using the term 'poppet' a lot (YodaTheCoda?)
  • Pouya posting a ridiculously obfuscated, tiny Arkanoid-style game
  • The Radeon advert
  • bishop_pass posting lots of interesting photos (and talking about horses)
  • Yann L posting amazing screenshots every so often, causing threads to digress

There was also a user called something like "pirate lord", who had no experience what so ever but was 100% convinced the game design he had been working on for years would be the second best (that's right, for some reason he never expected to beat the unnamed best game!) game ever.

Those usernames...

The way you can tell this is really old is there's an active 4E contest going on... those haven't been around in ages.

Also, the fact that I registered in 2004 makes me feel like a young greenie compared to some of you.

Why were so many people having difficulties in 2005?

Why were so many people having difficulties in 2005?

I assume a lot of it was probably just a joke.

Don't think difficulties, think more "solutionally challenged"

Sabreman and bishop_pass must be buying stocks of every champagne and caviar company listed on Wall Street. The functional programming revolution is nearly a stone's throw away and Clojure is actually popular.

That was part of the 4E contest.

Who came up with the "HTML with Variables" and "MMOHockey" memes? Those were classic, lol.

Ugh, that Radeon advert. Man, GDN almost had an Exodus of biblical proportions because of that.

Oh, man. I remember when SuperPig almost shit his pants when [I forget the user] created that Javascript script that made all the text in the posts float in elliptical patterns. That shit was awesome!

And of course, I have to mention it (at least once a year). The Black Theme. Oh, how we miss thee sad.png

His score was ALSO amazingly bad, but I have a feeling the user in question was something like "warsong"?

Lots of hits here:

(Un?)fortunately, all those javascript links were broken in one of the forum updates.

The inception thread also contained the same script to throw around all the page elements, plus one to change everyone's username to the same thing, or change all the images on the page to a meme, etc...

These both originated in the IRC channel, I think. vipejc was the MMO hockey guy, maybe? I was there when it originally happened, I had a log file saved somewhere but damned if I can find it. Both Warsong and Pirate Lord were serious disasters too, we don't tend to see people that persistent nowadays. Or we're more aggressive on the moderation side, not sure.

As for the old TA driven lounge, I dunno. It was certainly wacky fun but it could get tiresome. Plus I didn't get along too well with those guys.

As long as we're having a nostalgia fest, I'll toss the name Landfish out there. ^_^

Phone game idea available free to someone who will develop it (Alphadoku game - the only existing phone game of this type is both for windows phone only and awful. PM for details.)

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

Dammit, I missed the cutoff by four months! Oh well, next year I'll be in among the nostalgics. I had a long hiatus between 2008-ish and this year, though - got married, had a kid, things happen...

I've been around since then, and a bit longer. I guess I'm old-school around here, but not the oldest of the old. Just a few more old-timers need to die of old age and/or sedentary lifestyle before I can claim that honor though, so there's that to look forward to biggrin.png

I went by ravyne2001 for a period after the great hackening, then at some point convinced a mod to merge my account history -- got to keep my posts all together, but lost a fair bit of reputation in the process, no matter though.

The spider thread was probably the funniest thing ever here.
