My advice is to not think about what type of code you need to type to achieve something because making a game is not about "typing some basic code".
It is about problem solving -what I can take from what I know previously that I read and married these information together to create something wonderful.
While I never used Unity, my advice for learning any new technology is to learn something new about it and apply it everyday. No matter how small the features is.
If you are good at Unity, just try to make the strategy game out of Unity.
It will be more learning experience for you. It is important to make mistakes and make them early on. You might even know more about the technology than you think
when you made a strategy game out of it.
