Inside the Depths - A psychological horror game

Heya guys! This is going to be my own personal Dev blog for my upcoming game, Inside the Depths. Now, for a little backdrop here, development for this game started recently. I wanted to create this game because I wanted to see if I can make something rather different than what other developers can create in the horror genre. So how can I make something different? Well, I'm going to do something weird - I'n going to attempt to go into your self-conscious.

That may seem weird and a bit unsettling, but that's the entire point. I'm going to put the player within a world that is both unnatural and mysterious. Sounds are scattered around, objects are moving, the atmosphere is vividly horrifying. I came into development knowing that insanity will be hard to create, because people are in control of their thoughts and consciousness. Unfortunately for me, I don't have any Oculus Rift support to add in the mix. Perhaps next time.

There is no story, character development, or any of that time-consuming stuff. All you have is your mind and it's tricks.

So, what is the actual goal of the game? The goal of the game is to keep yourself consciously active within the world space for as long as possible. The world itself is big and full of mystery, but it's also dark and evil. I won't have monsters chasing you, or rooms with jump scares awaiting you, but I will strike fear within you by using sound and movement. If are fooled and go the wrong path, you will die.

That my seem odd, but in a more detailed statement: The player will be engulfed with a list of elements that will attempt to bring the player closer into something that will make the game over. Say, if there's a knocking behind a door. The player will gain interest and enter. And I didn't say there wasn't going to be any monsters...

What is currently done?

A day & night system.

Main Menu.

Player movement and motions.

That's all I have for now. I'll be updating this 'blog' with more details as the game progresses. Now for a proper ending, I'll show you guys the main menu! :)

Man, the idea sounds interesting and I am curious to experiment it, keep it going!

However, I think revealing so much about horror games ruins them a bit.. as soon as a person reads what you wrote, the experience cant be fully enjoyed anymore. Mystery is the soul of the business. Try to disclose to the audience information in a more mysterious and dramatic way, so everyone is still wanting to play after reading your dev log and before actually playing it :D

Trust me, the game itself is filled with a lot of mysterious contents and even 'logic'. The overall base concept is put here, which explains the goal for the whole 'psychological' theme. But that's really the start of it.
