Hi,

 

This is probably not in the right forum space (apologies).

 

I'm currently working on a project and have reached a point where I'm tackling something I know little about.

My target is to have a 30 seconds trailer (narrator + gameplay footage) but I'm not sure who to contact, what to expect, on how much to spend to get this done.

 

Truth is, I could do it myself (which may be appropriate if only to learn what goes into it) but I am a bit worried that the result would be under par. While making games is a business that I know and am experienced with, marketing isn't. I'm not skilled at finding catchphrases, and I'm not a great narrator...

 

Therefore, if any of you happen to have any info on how to get started, please let me know.

I'm currently looking at a series of articles on "how to market your game", but I find them highly theoretical and I feel like I have a very practical case at hand.

But if you are instead looking to hire an advisor or consultant, then yes, the Classifieds is where to do that.

Hi,

 

Some businesses find college students to work on such things, sometimes even officially thru the college work co-operative program which connects businesses with students.  There are a lot of very talented college students, I must say. Advertise it on Craig's list and you might get a student who needs to do a class project and willing to be of service at no cost for the experience, career reference, and class project completion, perhaps even a part of their graduating dissertation.


Personal life and your private thoughts always effect your career. Research is the intellectual backbone of game development and the first order. Version Control is crucial for full management of applications and software.  The better the workflow pipeline, then the greater the potential output for a quality game.  Completing projects is the last but finest order.

Figure out your budget first.

 

This is something real companies deal with all the time.  Sometimes they have only a few hundred dollars to spend, sometimes they have many million dollars to spend.

 

As was mentioned above, if you have no budget you might be able to leverage the very creative folk at a nearby school. If you have a larger budget you might consider working with a professional advertising company. They work with all price ranges from the short cheap ads you see every day to the Superbowl commercials.

 

Effective commercials can cost virtually nothing or they can be amazing masterpieces costing several million dollars to create. Obviously you won't be able to afford an all-star medieval sports team, but the camera phone "We buy golf, um, clubs" commercial more than quadrupled his business and was a huge success.

 

Of course, once you get the commercial created you also need to pay to have it shown to people, so consider that as part of your budget. A $5M nationwide TV ad blitz is probably out of the question, but a $50 Google ad is unlikely to improve your business. Let your budget help guide you there as well.

Actually getting the ad shown is something I know a bit about. I've used Google Ads and Facebook Ads a lot in the past. There are however other more relevant platforms to use for game advertising however.

 

Provided that what I'm looking for is mostly professional video editing (use gameplay footage) plus added captions, on a relatively short segment, I was looking at something in the range of 50-200$, but I have no idea whether that is realistic.

 

As 3Ddreamer pointed out, students may be an option, but I wouldn't know how to reach out to them in this area...
