I just noticed that this weekend, you can download and use RPG Maker for free. I figured I'd share that news here since it might be worth checking out.

They also have a bunch of DLC on the Weekly Humble Bundle.  Must be a thing...

Can anyone confirm the assets are in some popular format or a closed one? All I found in the site is this:

"DLC packs are only fully compatible with RPG Maker VX Ace."

I dug into the Resource Manager and it looks like for graphics you can import  png, jpg, and bmp. It looks like you can export the existing assets as png.

For sound you can import ogg, wma, mp3, wav. It looks like you can export the existing assets as ogg.

For movies you can import ogv. There wasn't an existing movie to export.

The scripting language it uses is Ruby, and the sample scripts seem clean and well commented (after a quick 30 second browse of the starter code).

This was just a quick 5 minute dive, but it looks promising.

About the Humble Bundle pack, I was just digging trough all the assets, each asset creator has a readme.txt in it's folder which says:

"You may **NOT** use the resources in this pack for creating games made with engines/programs other than RPG Maker series.".

This is really crap, i just thrown away $25. They could have informed us a bit better on this, assets are assets imho, however we use it is up to our self if we pay for it.

If I'm not mistaken, the actual RPG Maker software is included as well. I've always thought that RPG Maker was too restricted for my taste, but maybe time has come to give it a try. God, I love Humble Bundle.

Actually, not ALL of them have this restriction. Unless I am missing something:

JoelSteudler_AllMusicSampler_RPGMakerDLCBundle3, BestOfMemberPlusResourceSampler_RPGMakerDLCBundle3 and HumbleBundle_ExclusiveRPGMakerResourcePack ARE restricted.

ModernDay_MusicMiniPack_RPGMakerDLCBundle1* and Steampunk-Western_PreviewPack_RPGMakerDLCBundle2** are not.

I was also very disappointed with those findings, the restricted packs have a lot of nice assets =/

* From the readme:

This Resource Pack contains a collection of modern music by Joel Steudler. This Add-on Pack is compatible with the full version of "RPG MAKER VX, RPG Maker XP, and RPG Maker VX Ace" and can be used with IG Maker to create your own game. You may also use this music with other engines.

** From the readme:

All resources in this bundle are free to use in commercial and non-commercial projects. You are free to use these resources in conjunction with any game-making software you choose. You are prohibited from freely distributing any of the resources in part or in whole, and you are also prohibited from selling any of these resources. They are for use in projects only.
