Is Game Maker studio any good? I have Game maker 8.0 pro version, but is it worth getting studio? Is Game maker in general a good engine to use for game creation?

Thanks.

Try it yourself, it's free. There are plenty of developers who use it, see Locomalito productions to get a clue. So, I think the aswer is "yes, you can make games using it", but it's a non-answer since we can't know if it's the right tool for you. It's not for me, for example.

I thought it was fine for use. Simple and easy. It didn't have quite the capabilities I was looking for and I didn't really like their programming language.

Also, the user interface was really borked on my machine even if I adjusted all my resolution and DPI settings.

I moved on to Unity and I've been thoroughly enjoying it. To be honest though I didn't really give GameMaker studio enough of a chance. Made a couple of small games only, but when I started to get into some more complex games, it started to feel combersome to me.

It's a very capable platform that's been used for plenty of successful games, and offers plenty of export options.

Usage won't differ greatly from your existing experience with the 8.0 version -- they haven't updated the outdated UI at all -- so it's really up to you to evaluate whether you think the added features and functionality (you can look at a brief listing of the features here) will benefit you more than the version you already have. Game Maker can be a great tool for making the right type of games -- it's an incredibly poor choice for anything 3d for example -- and again your existing experience with the older version should give you a pretty good idea of what sort of games are well suited to the platform.

It's certainly not for everyone, but if you've enjoyed the previous version and found it capable of the sort of projects you're interested in you should definitely consider it again. Stencyl and Construct 2 are alternatives you might also consider if you want something like Game Maker.

Hope that helps! smile.png

Another (free) alternative to check out is Game Develop: http://compilgames.net/

Personally, I found GMS able to make games more easily and more naturally than other popular engines, if you're wanting to make certain types of games, particularly more simply 2D games; however, the cost of the export packages is pretty steep when you can export to all the same platforms on something like Unity for free (which also does 2D pretty well now). I also was very frustrated with GMS's sound capabilities (or lack thereof). Hope you don't want looping music in your game or anything like that.

It's pretty limited, but if you're creating something that works fine within those limitations, I think it's great. The organization and combination of scripting + drag/drop makes for really fast production on 2D games.

Game Maker Studio is best. Price is lower than other engines. It supports shaders too. The professional version is free.

If you are coming from Game Maker then it is the best option. You will not have to worry about learning a new software. Many people waste their time searching the best game developemnt software online that they will never find.
