Is construct worth buying? it looks better. I tried game maker and it wasn't very good. Plus the amount of typos they had in their text make me question if they were literate.

Construct 2 is pretty good. Give it a try, you can do a lot with the free version. It has its positives (such as lower cost) and negatives (exporting to Android/iOS is possible but has a higher chance of running into problems) than Game Maker.

It's very capable as a HTML5 engine, but has some issues with mobile exporting for larger or more complicated games and PC exports can be a bit bloated in terms of filesize.

It's very easy to use, and not overly restrictive in terms of the types of games you can make (other than the obvious lack of 3d capabilities). Documentation is excellent, and updates (both new features, and improvements to existing) are released frequently. They also have an active and helpful community, although they can often be a little overly defensive about any criticisms of the software.

The limitations of the free version are quite generous, so I would recommend giving it a good try to see if it suits you.

I'll briefly expand on this since I also touched on it briefly myself. The HTML5 export is top-notch, but none of the other exports are true native exports; instead, they make use of third-party wrappers for the HTML5 version of the game. This means problems with the exports often need to be fixed by a third party rather than the makers of Construct 2, and that the process isn't always as nice as working with Construct 2.

Hope that helps! smile.png

Are there any better ways for an aspiring game dev to make a game? Or are Game Maker and Construct about the best for this kind of stuff?

Best is subjective. Many people think going the most extensive, thorough way is best. And sometimes it is.

However, Game Maker and Construct 2 might be easiest for a 2D game. For 3D, you may want to look at Unity

In my recent evaluation of the various options, it's actually Stencyl I would probably try out of the three. In order, Stencyl, Construct2 then GameMaker.

The most important difference is that Stencyl nor Construct suppport XB or PS, and only Construct supports WiiU. Stencyl is PC/Mac/Phones only.

Gamemaker has been really underestimated though it exists before the crazy indie game rush. GML scripting is indeed very well done.

I tried it several years ago, then tried it now.

Except the exepensives new export function (html5, android... which I know is nearly mandatory), the application hasn't evolved much.

It is still good, but I doubt its functionnality will grow aside of the exports.

If you want to make a little game quickly and learn some tricks at a scripting level, it is for you.

If you really want to learn programming game to move forward to other, more complicated, tools or language, it may not be the best choice.
