Problem with blending & transparency in OpenGL

I''m trying to do a small game, with OpenGL, where you control a space ship that you see from above. The space ship is made out of a quad with a texture on it. In the background I have a sphere. The problem is that when I try to use blending so that I can see the sphere around the space ship, you can see it through the ship too. Please help me fix this...

what function are you using in glBendFunc()?
