stupid tag descriptions

Can we please do away with the stupid tag descriptions that seem to be directly read from Wikipedia, e.g. See http://www.gamedev.net/search - it's not really useful or relevant for the site to try and tell us that python refers to a constricting snake all the tag descriptions are completely out of context...

Thanks!

The idea was to provide some sort of basic default description, and unfortunately it hasn't worked well for a lot of the tags.

They're basically a wiki system though, and you should be able to edit the descriptions if you come across a dodgy or missing default: when looking at one of the "tag card" popups click into the "info" section to view the full description, and there should be a green "improve this tag" link that will take you to the editor.

I'm not sure if the system was designed with an easy way to remove the default descriptions from existing tags, but we might be able to do something about newly created tags. Any suggestions for an alternate (obviously legal) source for default descriptions that might provide better data? ...alternatively, do you think we would be better off simply having no default at all?

I never noticed this before, because I tend to ignore the tags (I think they just create noise). But it's pretty hilarious.

I think having no default (that is, new tags default to an empty description) is better than trying to import the contents of Wikipedia articles or whatever. It's what StackExchange does, and this feature is clearly trying to emulate the SE model. Defaulting to empty doesn't predispose the tag to particular usage.

I agree, I would hope that people on these forums have enough common sense to know what development or python means in context and not need a description underneath. If a definition is needed, this is what google is for cool.png
