Could anyone recommend a free-tool for viewing game assets?

Blender?

You can download it as a zip, it's free and small size to download.

I used to use a trial version of a software called deep exploration.

It's quite good. Sometimes I really want to have a separate tool used just to view the game assets

Usually for fun.

Just like you have the XnView and Photoshop at the same time

:)

Thanks

Open Asset Importer includes both a library for loading various 3D formats as well as a visualizer for viewing them.

It obviously can only view formats it knows about. Most games will use proprietary, custom formats that no off-the-shelf or universal tool will know how to decode. If you're just trying to view some particular game's assets, you will probably need to find or write a specialized viewer or converter.

Thanks a lot, I'll look into that.

Have fun
