This is somewhat tangentially related to the thread, but last year's winner, Try. Die. Repeat., was recently played by Markiplier on his channel. It's really cool to see one of the Week of Awesome entries (or its post-competition polished form, I presume) being played on so large a channel! ^_^

Here's the video:

heeeeeeeeey \o/

yeah! Markiplier played it last week, that was cool! he even put the link in the description!

I think he found it because Game Jolt featured the game on the home page, one year ?after xD

and Pewdiepie played it last year, it gave a good boost too :D

but they played the version which I participated in the WoA III, I only added some minor sounds in the boss level, put my new company screen and compressed the game!

~

I started to work on the full version only last month D: because I was working at 2 jobs to pay my living costs and save money to work on it without problems...

Now I got a good feedback and I started to create a fan base!

If someone needs help, I have some tips on marketing :P (feel free to add me on skype: rodolfo.valezin)

Really thanks, slicer! you've changed my life with the WoA game jam xD

Great write up thaumaturge :)

I just want to touch base with one thing you said:

However, the base on which this game is built may yet have some use: I'm fairly happy with it, and am tempted to use it for future jams (likely not the Week of Awesome jam, given the rules). I even have in mind an idea for a first-person hack-n-slash game, should I do so.

I'm assuming your referring to the rule about creating work specifically for WoA. I feel that in this case having a framework that was created for a prior WoA game would not violate that rule, The entire goal of that rule is basically to prevent people from taking a game they already have done, reskinning it, and call it good. In general it's fine for alot of framework/foundation code to be re-used here, any tools that might work with them(such as map editors) are also fine. In general the only thing i ask is the actual core gameplay mechanics are not pre-existing and that work actually has to be done to make things into a "game". but having code that aids in setting up those features isn't violating that rule, so I'd think you would be ok to use this code in future WoA events as well.

Thank you! I appreciate that. ^_^

I'm assuming your referring to the rule about creating work specifically for WoA.

Indeed, specifically the bit that prohibits "existing game logic". Since the base that I'm referring to includes such things as movement, player-control, and (at the least) base classes and logic for attacks and enemies, my interpretation of the rules is that it would be inadmissible.

(In all fairness, using this code for another project would probably call for some changes--there are elements in at least some of the base-classes that are probably a bit too project-specific, or that I might want to apply more broadly than is currently the case. As a result, it would become more generic--a base for "simple first-person-shooter" projects--but nevertheless, I feel that quite a bit of what I see as "gameplay code" would be present.)

I suppose it comes down the the question of where the line lies between "framework" code and "gameplay" code--I'm honestly not sure of where it lies. Am I erring too far on the side of caution?

for you guys, I put some words together about my experience with the free exposure here:

http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/RodolfoValezin/20160913/280155/When_free_exposure_goes_right_I_think_with_data.php

it got featured on Gama Sutra and today at Made with Unity oO'

I wrote it to spread a little more about the game and it seems to have worked D:
