I''m completely new to game development, and i don''t know any programming, but i want to make a commercial game because i think i''ve come up with an extremely good idea. In this game i originaly wanted it to be an online game, but that meant needing a server (apparantly that costs heaps!), so i now think that i''ll disregard the server idea, and leave that for the hopefull sequel to this game, (once i have money from the first game to pay for it). You may think i''m thinking too big for a beginner, but i want to do this. Could someone contact me and/or be willing to answer my questions? (an ICQ number would be good). I want someone to explain all the steps involved in making a comercial game, right from the start. I''ve been talking to some other people, and they tell me that i''ll need to setup multiple servers around the world if i want to make an international online game, how would i do this? please contact me. 2 options

1. do it yourself
2. get others to make the game for you, while you do design

option the first is what i suggest as getting a team together over the net is harder than winning the superbowl

so this what i would do
1.learn to program(most games are written in C/C++)
2.practice programming so youre cofortable with the language(if you try and write this game as your first ever project chances are youll fail. like all new things people learn, you have to be able to walk before you can run, and run before you can fly)
3. learn an API DX or OpenGL. im not gonna say which is better cause it will start a flame war. what i will say is that openGL is more intuative for the newbie and is structured based.
4. practice, practice and keep on practicing till you feel you know enough aspects to start your game. build your experience by making a few small games to start with, pong, space invaders ect

now along the way you should be reading tones, and visiting resourcefull sites like this one.
theres lots of good articles on how to get started

g/luck
