There seems to be some confusion about these so called "PS2 Linux Kits". Some people think that they will be able to create games that will run on the PS2 using this kit but I don''t think that this is the case. In order to create PS2 games, a PS2 Dev Kit is needed which is quite different from the PS2 linux kit that is being sold in the near future - it is also considerably more expensive - several thousand $.

It may be possible to make games which run under the linux operation system using the PS2 linux kits but such games will not be PS2 games and will probably not even use the hardware features of the PS2 that are tuned for games development.

If anybody has any more info on this then I would be happy to hear it.

My understanding of the Linux kit is that you will be able to write software for it (don''t know about accelleration), but the software will only run on other PS2s with the kit. Kind of like the NetYarzoo or whatever.

linux kits allow you to write linux applications not PS2 executable. the site states you will be able to use the vector units, dma, gs, etc through libraries.

you DO NOT need a dev kit to create PS2 games. if you look at any PS2 game executable is is an ".elf" file. if you have an assembler or compiler that creates ".elf" image files under the MIPS format then that''s all you need. well, of course you would need to know how to layout the CD, and have either a Sony PS2 CD burner or a modchip. there are plenty that are available (i.e. GNU = free, codewarrior, and of course my own = free, etc).

henryx: so PLEASE STOP spreading propaganda.

Are these libraries any good though? I remember the Yaroze having stripped-down libraries compared to the full PSX devkit. I can''t imagine Sony would let a $300 kit have the potential of a $25000 kit and be available to every Joe on 3+ continents.

The official release is here.

The comment on games for PS2 is vague, but here''s the quote:

but also create original programs and
applications designed to run on "Linux (for PlayStation 2)."

So it sounds like you can create apps but they will only run on the linux PS2 box. I''ll look into it more.

Damn just what Linux needs, ANOTHER closed source player on the field.
For 300$ do you guys think that it will be the same libraries that are includes with the very expensive sold to the PS" games developers ? or is it just an emasculated version?
Why don''t they use OpenGL as an API? then I would buy the stuff.

My name says it all
Sony''s biggest source of income is royalties from games so it is not likely that they would release any tool that would allow you to create games for normal PS2s without paying them for every copy you sell. However, they may figure that the cost of the Linux kit pays any royalties for games that run on Linux PS2s and allow you to freely create games that run on other that platform.
From their FAQ:

Can I program PlayStation 2 Games under Linux (for PlayStation 2) ?

You can program your own games that will work under Linux (for PlayStation 2). Software that you develop can also take advantage of the PlayStation 2 high performance graphics hardware. However, you cannot make your own CDs or DVDs that will operate with a PlayStation 2.

Is the PlayStation 2 specific hardware available under Linux (for PlayStation 2)?

Yes. The PlayStation 2 System Manuals (provided) include detailed specifications on the vector processing units VU0 and VU1, the DMA Controller, the Emotion Engine CPU, the Graphics Synthesizer (GS) and the IPU (MPEG decode assist). Software libraries, tools, device drivers, source code and examples are provided to show how to access this hardware.

The PlayStation 2 contains a subsystem for operating peripherals and audio including the SPU2 (Sound Processing Unit), the IOP, the HDD, the DVD drive, controllers, memory cards, USB, i.Link and other peripherals. The hardware specification for these units is not disclosed. The Runtime Environment provided on DISC 1 includes binary software device drivers for controlling these hardware units. Source code for the Runtime Environment is proprietary and will not be disclosed. However, DISC 2 contains Linux device drivers (with source code) which show how to access all these devices through the Runtime Environment interface. This gives the developer access to the functionality of all the devices but not the complete hardware specification.

Ok, people, please go to www.playstation2-linux.com and READ THE FAQ. Stop trying to guess. You can write games for the PS2 due to the PS2 debug RUNTIME which comes with the PS2 Linux Kit. This is basically the same PS2 OS, but your games will not be able to run on a PS2 without the PS2 Linux kit and the PS2 RUNTIME. This due to not having the encryption algorithms and official codes that the PS2 basic OS checks for. The PS2 Runtime is essentially the same thing without all the official stuff. You can also develope linux software that utilized the Processors of the PS2, such as VUO. Read the FAQ at the US PS2 Linux home, then comment.
