State of the union address

Anyone else watch it? I cant believe i wasted an hour of my life doing it, but i did. In what amounted to little better than a fourth grader giving a speech to his peers on why he is going to do what he wants to do and why he expects everyone to agree with him. Aside from mind-numbing super-patriotic rhetoric, he continues to objectify the word "terrorist", leaving it to the powerful nations to do the same, and assault groups of people in their respective countries in the name of their own war on terror. I hate to see separatists in kashmir called terrorists, all theyre trying to do is achieve self-determination, and the seemingly-hypocritical "largest democratic government" prevents them, even after numerous appeals from the UN. Likewise with chechans/russia kurds/turkey and paletinians/isreal. And what annoys me the most, i think, is this fascade of goodness/purity that he''s trying to appeal to americans with (they wouldnt know any better...but no one expects americans to know about what goes on anywhere else). Like they cant do wrong with their current tactics. There''s already been more deaths in afghanistan after 9/11 than the WTC attack. What is he trying to prove? That they can kick the crap out of an army that doesnt have an airforce or navy, and whose weapons are older than 90% of their soldiers? How does someone learn how to land an airplane into a skyscraper by blowing a door open, doing a few sommersaults, shooting a cardboard cutout with a kalishnikov, then jumping onto the back of a slowly moving moped? I dont know how "terrorist" training camps got that description. It seems more likely that they were installed to train people to keep the rouge factions (aka northern aliance) of afghanistan in check. Now that the taliban is gone, we can expect the price of heroine and other opiates to drop dramatically, woo go US! I actually found some respect for Reuters after, in an interview, said that they would not use the word "terrorist" to address or describe anyone, they say the word is too subjective and i agree. Anyways, America sucks, and i have jury duty next week. glad i pay taxes

I somehow get the feeling that Bush could have given the best speech ever written and firahs would still say it was 4th grade drivel and find random things to complain about.

What are we proving in Afghanistan? That if your country has terrorists that we can link to something getting blown up in the US, and you don''t hand them over immediately when we ask nicely, yes, we''re going to kick the living tar out of your pitiful excuse for an army (and I don''t intend to make any moral judgement on this, I''m just stating the obvious). I for one am delighted to see the Taliban fall... and even some women in the new government. It''s about time the women got some rights over there.

While I probably am not as mad as Firahs on the subject, I do think that the U.S. didn''t put a whole hell of a lot of thought into this. Also bear in mind I didn''t watch the State of the Union address either.

It seems like ever since this war on terrorism has started that its been one big psychology project. Be alert! Continue spending! Keep flying! Carry on with your day to day activities! All these things are encouraging us to go about our normal lives.
Shouldn''t his have been done before 9/11? Plus the leaflets they dropped in Afghanistan had psychology stuff written all over it. Now the Justice Department asked the question why didn''t kids and teenagers feel bad about this tragedy? And one guy has the nerve to go around to schools making speeches telling kids how they should feel. Sorry but the government does not need to tell people how they should think. I am all for free thought. What I really hated was that they imposed new laws to give the government more control in the name of national security. I don''t know if that makes me a liberal or a conservative (or whiney little bitch).

How come we didn''t dump some of this much money on other wars?
War on drugs, war on homelessness, and a few others.

We have injured more of our troops through friendly fire than the enemy has done to us. Our plan of attack: Go over there and bomb the sh*t out of them! Eliminate them! Kill them all! The question in my mind is does this constitute as geonocide?

You voted for the president, so its your choice. I didn''t vote for him so I''m not at fault (or credit for those who did vote for him). I could rant on some more but I want to make this short so it is readable. Remember, this is just my view of it.

I wouldn''t say that America sucks. I think that much of what is going on sucks. I think the biggest problem is that the people that pull Bush''s strings are using all this to maintain the status quo everywhere in the world where it suits them, and change it everywhere it doesn''t.

Case in point.
Terrorists that fight their own government are called something else, revolutionaries.

We aided the Northern Aliance, this gained us an ally in the region. Eary last year people in the bush administration were saying that Afganistan would play an important role in the world of Oil in the coming years, now, through US intervention, an Anti-US (Western) government has been removed and a pro-us (western) has been put in place. Very conveinent.

People say that this is because the Taliban was a cruel governemt. To that I have to ask how many Palistinians (spelling?) have been killed in the past month by the Isralie government? But still the US gives unwavering support to Isreal.
There are unfair/repressive/cruel governments around the world.
But we don''t do anything about it. Mostly because these government still trade with the US, and when you are cruel to your people you can make fruits/proudcts very cheaply.

I wish I knew the name of a video I saw once. It was a documentary about a dole plantation. They went to South America and opened a plantation right next to a village. Every male in town worked there. They used a pestacide that was illegal in every western country on earth. Every male in the town became steirel (however you spell it). Within one generation that town will be gone, because of Dole. It''s the government that lets it''s people be treated like this. But our government knows it''s happening, and doesn''t care. Why should they, we got cheap banana''s out of it.

because a certain country greatest earner is weapon sales, thus its not really spending money but trying to kickstart the economy

firahs, what's with all this frustration anyway?

The USA nuked and bombed Japan to rubble, until they surrended unconditionally. How is Japan doing now?

America had troops all over Western Europe, and Germany was a ruin. How is the Western Europe doing now?

The USA conquered half of Korea. How are they doing now?

To give a random example, for some 15 years after the second world war the regime empowered by force by the Soviet Union had as the main concern the extermination of the intelectuals, the political elite, many of the priests, and countless others unlucky ones and to control all the rest of the so called free people with an enormous network of informers. If we're really lucky we may start to recover some 15 years from today.

You say the USA are evil. I don't think you have any idea what evil is.

The mujahedeen held against the Soviets for 20 years. The taliban fell in three months. I guess you''re not the only one delighted to see the Taliban go.
I think the US thinks of itself a bit to highly... True, they are the biggest country around. And the richests. But mostly because of their wonderfull foreign politics.

They believe they are the leaders of the world. They think everyone has to do what they want, or else they can simply erase the speck from the worldmap with impunity. They no longer think they need to give good reasons for what they are doing, because they are the boss.

They want us Europeans to fully support their attack on Afghanistan, because they had "really good proof" that the terrorists were there. No, we couldn''t see the "really good proof", we just have to believe them on their word. Yeah, right...

I think the UN should make a fist. America shouldn''t be such a big influence in the world politics, bypassing the UN (and only paying the UN when they actually need its support... sigh...) The UN is the only legitimate authority in the world to point its finger at another country. If you ask me, no country should be allowed to go to war with another country without talking with the UN first, or else face an embargo.

Also I think Europe should try to become a bit more active... I guess Europe and Japan are just about the only ones whom can keep America in line when one of its presidents decides to use its power for not-so-good goals...

I believe the world is going in a really bad direction. I also believe we will survive it, and become better.

yeah them cavemen should be bloody thankful for us bombing them, hell we should even ask the money for the bombs back!

Think very carefully about that statement before you insist on it.

Every single world power except the US has, since the dawn of time, been manifest-destiny crazy.

The following is a list of world powers *that I can remember* that have taken over the known world:

Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Mongolian, Ethiopian, Babylonian, Spanish, English... the list goes on.

So, here''s the US, with, as you''ve stated, the biggest economy, best technology, most prepared armed forces... We beat Japan. We set them back up as their own country. We beat Germany. We set them back up as their own country. We beat the Saudis out of Kuwait. We set Kuwait back up as its own country. We are currently beating Afghanistan. We are already setting them up as their own country. Big-picture, getting the snot beaten out of them by the US is probably the best thing that''s happened to the Afghani people since camels. Give it 15 years and they''ll be out of the third world country status they''ve been in so long.

Yes, the US thinks it''s the leader of the world... and economically and militarily speaking, they happen to be RIGHT. So, I''d say sit back and be glad that the US government is relatively benign and has no interest in expanding territory, like all past world leaders have.
