Cutting into sub abjects

Hi, I want to cut up an object, which is easy enough. But where I make the cuts, I want these to form objects of there own. Basically I want to chop up a thin rectangle into subobjects to create a shattered effect. Anyone know how to do this?

ok, you didnt say which tool/program you are using but.
I would also like to know how to do this, so far I cut a polygon, then split each vertice into 2, sometimes it seemed to do this on its own though....
but the rectangle would still be classed as one object, but you could still move "shattered" pieces around..
I''m using 3dsmax 4,
I''ve tried to add in a mesh editing modifier.
Then edit mesh at by element,
Then I tried cut, slice explode, tesselate.
I just want to chop it up into smaller objects
