Texture-Compression is ugly

I want to use texturecompression, because I use so many sattelite-photos in my flightsim, that 32MB is not enought. On my GeForce3 everything is okay, but on GeForce2 with 32MB it''s very slow, because the memory ist full.
I downloaded the source-code example for S3TC-texture-compression from nVidia, but I couldn''t believe what I have seen: The texture in the demo is very very ugly, when S3TC is active. I thought that the difference is not so big.... Is there a trick, which I don''t know?
