Is it reasonable and OK to change the main thread''s priority to something high just before drawing, and then revert back to normal priority after drawing?

It depends on if you are constantly drawing using a loop. If that is the case, set the thread priority in the start of the loop. I set the thread priority on my engine and saw no framerate increase at all. It depends on how you do it.
