how do you make realistic textures???(half-life)

Uhm...I guess they use talanted graphic artists..?
Go look at http://www.3dpalette.com for some tips.

Some people also prefer using photo-realistic textures, i.e. they take photos of the material and create a texture from it.

i''m not sure if you mean how did valve make realistic textures, or how you could make realistic textures for half-life..
i''m sure valve had plenty of good people working just on the textures..
a common texture editor usually related to half-life mods is wally (www.telefragged.com/wally/).. that site''s also got some tutorials on using wally to create textures..
