Fastest data structure

18 April 2013 - 07:15 AM

Hi,

I'm using a hash map to store my objects which contain vertices and world offset position.  I use a string as the key, the key being the objects x,y,z position stored as a string - used to lookup if object has been drawn or needs drawing or removing.  Is there anything faster than a hashmap for this?

This is in Java by the way :-)

Thanks

Voxel chunk management

18 April 2013 - 01:39 AM

Hi,

I'm creating a voxel type game (like mine craft).  I've got the rendering, camera etc all done. My chunks are 16x16x16 blocks.  I only display chunks that are at a given distance from the camera.  At the moment all my chunks are stored in an ArrayList (java).  Now, what I'd like to know is, should you just add chunks to this array list when they are in view and remove when they aren't for memory reasons?

Thanks,

Steve

Collision detection on minecraft type landscape - i.e. Voxels

12 April 2013 - 05:29 PM

Hi,

I've generated a 'world' made up of voxels - think minecraft.  I'm using AABB for collision.  My issue is, what to do when collision occurs, so if moving forwards and collision, stop forward movement, if collision occurred while strafing left, stop left movement.  I kind of did this but if I am moving forwards and collision occurs and then I turn the player around say 90 degrees and then move forward, I still can't as still thinks there is a collision...How can I sort this out, do I need some form of plane intersection or normal vector?

Any help is much appreciated.  Link to video of issue below:

Steve

[GAME] Bubbsy

30 May 2011 - 04:16 PM

Hi,

My game Bubbsy is on the App store. I'm thinking of giving the source code away in the next few weeks, maybe some people could learn something from it?

Anyway, check Bubbsy out :-)

Thanks,
Steve

Draw filled 2d landscape

29 May 2011 - 08:54 AM

Hi,

Quite new to OpenGL but using OpenGL ES on mobile. Now I know it doesn't support GL_POLYGON so I thought maybe I can just use GL_TRIANGLE_STRIP. I want to create a
random 2d landscape for a side scroller, think of the old arcade game Defender, but I want the landscape filled in. Now I am guessing that I will need to create a lot of quads to do this and
fill each of them in? Is this the best approach?

Thanks,
Steve
