In Topic: Microsoft and the Xbox One. Thoughts?

Right now Sony has all the numbers:

gddr5 > ddr3

18 cu > 12 cu

176 gb/sec > 68 + 102 gb/sec

but when you consider a typical pixel shader workload

and factor in the xbox one has 2 memory bus (68 gb/sec + 102 gb/sec)

instead of 1 for the ps4 (176 gb/sec)

you find the 2 machines have identical bandwidth for the typical channels of:

texture read

target read depth + color

target write depth + color

but the xbox has much better latency for the high frequency target read/write

and the xbox can use the ddr3 bus in read only mode until the resolve

the ps4 has 50% more compute units ... but they will be waiting on memory

Microsoft needs to spin the performance of the xbox one for the people who care ...

raster operations is high frequency read/write which is latency sensitive

surely bandwidth isn't going to help here ...

ESRAM has 1/5 the latency of GDDR5

and converts high frequency read/write (zbuffering + blending) of pixel shading into a single sequential write transfer to DDR3

and opens wide the pixel shaders principal bottleneck

and frees the DDR3 bus for non-rendertarget transfers

which could mean xbox has 5x latency-sensitive performance and 0.75x bandwidth sensitive performance

my money is on the xbox ...

I haven't watched live TV for over a year

The money I save goes on netflix + lovefilm

DVD releases and TV shows are on torrents

No adverts + No PVR glitches + best of terrestrial TV is free online anyway (iplayer etc.)

Still nobody has really solved the discovery problem though ...

Do I think there might be a number of 16-30 males jumping ship to PS4 this generation, sure

but xbox live means all their friends will have to jump ship too ...

In Topic: What console are you buying in 2013?

I seen no reason to buy a next-gen console

Kinect 2 + Stereo 3D could be amazing ... but I saw no mention of that
