image artifact removal for cartoons

Is there any information about techniques for removing compression artifacts from cartoon like images? What little information I've been able to find about compression artifact removal focuses on photos. However, it seems like it should be possible to do much better with cartoon like images due to the knowledge that the image mostly consists of large flat areas and sharp lines.

How do you handle UIs in your games? In previous games, I've done it by manually drawing images with SDL, but for more complex interfaces that quickly becomes unweildy. Also, don't suggest Qt, becuase I can't get it to work.

Why is Pygame so much slower than plain SDL?

I decided to try out Pygame. Unfortunately, it seems to be very slow. Even a trival loop that just blits an image over and over gets only 18FPS (yes I did call surf.convert()). I know that SDL is capable of much better because I wrote a complete game in C++ with SDL that runs at well over 60FPS on the same computer.

So my question is, why is Pygame so much slower? As I understand it, Pygame is just a wrapper, with most of the work done inside of SDL, so the timings should be about the same.

I've made several 2d games in C++ using SDL, but I've been thinking about switching to PyGame because Python is much easier to code in. However, according to http://www.pygame.org/docs/tut/newbieguide.html, full screen updates are very slow in PyGame. Is this something to worry about? Is switching to Pygame worth it?

strange performance patterns

I have a python script which does some calculations, and I am trying to figure out how fast it is. I invoke it from the command line and it prints out the time taken after completing.

However, there is a mysterious pattern to the timings. When I first run it, it starts out relatively fast. However, subsequent runs become slower and slower. If I leave the computer idle for a while, it becomes fast again. I can't really think of any explanation for this. What is going on?
