They are sill used. I you see some of the stuff going on at chipmusic.org there are a lot of vintage gear being used especially for live performances. Some guys do "all hardware" shows with no computers involved. Of course there are usually digital tools like vsts and aus that can come close to the authentic sound, but nothing is gonna be 100% the same as vintage gear.
I feel its a double-edged sword. I feel happy that they KNOW what they want (some people don't), but at the same time, I feel like what they'll be happy with may end up being very similar to something that's already been done. But like Nathan said, you kind of have to bring your own thing to it too.
To me, Megaman II's sound track is definitive of what the NES could do. It's also got its own character as far as construction of songs,scales and melodies. Dress it up in any kind of instrument/remix and it still sounds like megaman 2.
Funny I have never spend much attention to the Megaman soundtrack but I will take a look as soon as possible.
Your song sounds pretty cool! I like that background bed of synth that plays through most of it. In my personal opinion, the horns that come in around 1:30 sound sort of out of place, but this kind of song is all about mixing things up, so I guess that's ok.
My suggestion if you want to really get a good idea of how to use compression and EQ and stuff like that, is to get isotope's oZone, and purchase the instructional videos (i think its a $30 add-on when you're checking out). It's costly to get oZone and the iLok you'll need, but those videos alone really help you see what mastering is all about and give you practical, step-by-step view of the process, instead of generalizations that you'll find in many tutorials. I'm still learning myself, but everything became clear as I watched those videos, and oZone gives you all the tools you'll need to produce professional stuff.
It's also funny to here an elegant sounding british guy mixing a scandalous reggae song in the tutorial for some reason.
everyone here has always given me extremely valuable feedback. I come from a chiptune/electronic background, so the further I foray into orchestral territory, the less sure I am of things. This is a song I made for an upcoming RPG, although my client is super happy with it, I'm wondering if there is something I can do to make it better as far as mixing/composition and other elements go.
The criteria for the song was:
-Should have a bit of post-apocolyptic feel but hopeful
-Should have a bit of that 'firefly' western sound
-Should be reminiscent of Final Fantasy
-Should give the impression that you're flying (the main character flies)
-Should showcase the guitar parts
Particular to this track's area: It's flying around a oppressive governments land, you can go there, but theres lot of laws and its a bit bleak and dystopian.
The guitars were recorded live (already had some great help mixing those from all you guys) and the other instruments are EWQL Hollywood Strings Gold and Symphonic Orchestra Silver.

Not bad at all. It's a bit predictable but I do like the arrangements. I think a change in the chord progression change after the initial part where the drums come in could do wonders to make it more interesting. Very nice homage to SNES RPG type stuff though!
