About Me

I'm a second year undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada), studying Software Engineering. Waterloo's engineering program is also a "co-op program", which means internships are required to graduate, six in total, four months each. I spent my first four months working at Qualcomm in San Diego, Cali, and I'm currently working at Morgan Stanley in New York, New York.


On the side, I have a deep interest in developing games. I've always had a few personal projects on the side, including 2d python game programming (using pygame), making little windows applications using C#, making a blog/website using php/sql.


My current project is a dumbed down clone of the uber-popular award winning game Minecraft. I'm writing it in C++ using OpenGL, and so far I can render around 32,000 textured cubes with >1400 fps (using VBO's and some decent culling). The reason for creating my own clone is not for hopes of success, but simply as a tool to get familiar with OpenGL. It's got a very steep learning curve compared to the eight or so years of programming I've done, and I think it's a great, simple project to get started on.


I see a lot of people trying to make this game, with varying differences, thinking they will have just as much success, but as Wayne Gretsky says, "A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be." In other words (and in terms of Minecraft), it's never necessarily a bad idea to try to reinvent the wheel better than the last, but real success comes from an original, brilliant idea.
