#4886054 Logging into GDnet without facebook

Posted by on 20 November 2011 - 07:36 PM

I have come to loath facebook. I soon realized how many people I was glad for our lives to part when they did. Not to be a jerk, but that's just it: Facebook becomes too personal. And it becomes time-consuming.

The point is, I'm breaking free from the bonds of internet "club houses" that I've indulged myself in. So here's the question I wanted to ask: how do I sign into GDnet without facebook?

#4878670 Last Minute Funny and Cheesy Halloween Costume Ideas

Posted by on 30 October 2011 - 02:11 PM

For those of you who celebrate this holiday and the days around it, what have you gone as or what do you plan on going as? I went to a couple of parties yesterday and my friends all had costumes. I, being the forgetful individual, had not thought about a costume.

So I went and bought a plastic Batman (Dark Knight) mask from my local Wal-mart and put it on, and wore a thick, black hoodie. At the party, people proclaimed me to be batman but would question my costume. In my best Dark-Knight voice impression (sore throat), I'd respond "I'm Batman. I am not the costume that Gotham deserves." and immediately flee the room.

Overal it was great for being last-minute. The year before I went as a homeless man and ended up making enough change at the end of the night to get a couple of drinks.

Any last-minute and funny Halloween costume stories? :D

#4873514 Xcode to Visual Studio

Posted by on 17 October 2011 - 10:20 AM

So I've recently tried porting my game from Mac (compiled under Xcode 4) to the Windows platform (compiled using Visual Studio 2008).

I eventually got it working fine, but upon execution, it crashes like never before. It turns out, there's some null memory being tossed around and bad iterator accessing data it shouldn't.
All of this was only discovered with a few minutes of debugging and I don't even know how many are actually there.

So, it pisses me off that Xcode and Mac did not detect these things (and some of them were just plain obvious). Now, I've told my small group of followers that the demo I was wrapping up is delayed yet again until I can track down all these bugs in Windows.

WHY. That sort of sloppy build-work shouldn't be allowed as a compiler. D: Is there any other reason for this?

#4860108 Is it generally wrong to style a C++ library like Java or C#?

Posted by on 10 September 2011 - 02:48 PM

I really enjoy the way Java and C Sharp organize their classes
(Especially Java for collecting its trashes)
But C Plus-plus looks nothing like Sharp
For the members are not covered by the double-colon's tarp.

Generally constants or values are accessed by the dot operator.
And everything is treated like an object. (Hey, I'm no hater).
The case in point is that I have not seen any code in C plus-plus
That looks anything like Sharp or Java; I wonder if there is a reason that is just.

i.e. C++
Colors::WHITE // Color constant
std::cout << "Blah blah blah" << std::endl;
Singleton* s = Singleton::GetInstance(); s->DoSomething();

i.e. Java/C# style
Colors.white // Color constant
System.out.println("Blah blah blah");

When C++ COULD be like this:
class ColorsClass
    const white = HEXRGB(255,255,255);
    const black = HEXRGB(0, 0, 0);

const ColorsClass Colors;

Is there a general reason to this design? C# and Java seem very clear.
Everything is treated as an object. But C++ isn't so near.
Would it be wrong to code a C++ app in the style of C# or Java?
Or would that be a coding sin and I awaken in hot boiling lava?

#4857398 My computer is talking to me

Posted by on 04 September 2011 - 01:54 AM

Once I had a debugger print off the contents of all the data in this hash I had. It was an interpreter and was filled with chars.
Upon displaying the contents, a series of letters seemed to have formed the words "quebec", "canada", "go there for healthcare".
Then I remembered that the program was reading a file full of unreliable ads to display in web browsers.
Immediately upon this realization, my nipples burst into flames and my computer swore obscenities, took a cab, and went to Mexico.

#4856148 What does GDNet think about my game engine?

Posted by on 31 August 2011 - 11:51 PM

I like how the thread is named "what does gdnet think about my game engine" but he's not liking what gdnet thinks about his game engine.

I wrote a short story once for fun. I showed it to my friends and family and I could tell right away they were not enjoying it. Their feedback was very vague and very unhelpful. I wanted to make it better but no one was explaining how I could. Then I went to gdnet and started a thread asking what they thought about my short story. Instantly, critical feedback was given to me on how to spruce my characters and strengthen the themes. Some suggested to start over in a new direction. These people had lots of experience in this field and if they didn't think I could have done any better, they would not have said anything.

But then I got pissed because no one praised my original effort, gave up, and became a dust bunny.
