"Squared" Sprite Sheet Generator

17 September 2012 - 11:25 AM

Hello, I need to generate a sprite sheet with squared sprite for a 2D game. How can I generate a sprite sheet where each frame has x = y? The only think I have to do is to "insert" some blank space between sprites (in case y were > x in the original sprite). Is there any program that I can use to trasform "irregular" sprite sheets to "squared" sprite sheets?

Monster thinking in an action rpg

23 August 2012 - 11:30 AM

Hello everybody,
i'm developing an action rpg with some University colleagues. Actually we're on monsters' ai design and we would like to implement a sort of "utility-based ai" so we have a "thinker" that assigns a numeric value on all the monster's decisions and we choose the highest (or the most appropriate, depending on monster's iq) and assign it in a monster's collection of decisions (like a goal-driven design pattern) .
One solution we found, is to write a mathematical formula for each decision, with all the important parameters for evaluation (so for a spell-decision we might have mp,distance from player, player's hp etc). This formula has also coefficients representing some of monster's behaviour (in this way we can alterate formulas by changing coefficients).
I've read also how fuzzy logic works; I was fashinated by it and by the many ways of expansion it has. I was wondering how we could use this technique to give our ai more semplicity, i mean create evaluations with fuzzy rules as IF player_far AND mp_high AND hp_high THEN veryDesiderable (for a spell having an high casting-time and consume high mp) and then defuzzificate it. In this way it's also simple to create a monster behaviour for example creating ad-hoc rules for every monster's iq category. But is it correct using fuzzy logic in a game with many parameters like an rpg? Is there a way of merging this two techniques? Are there better ai design techniques for evaluating monster's chooses ? Thanks

NPC dialogues : file or script?

06 August 2012 - 10:29 AM

I'm developing an action rpg with some friends. I would like to know the differences and pros/cons of making NPC's dialogue using a file in xml format instead of using a script. I see that script method is often used by game developers for NPC's text, but is it better then a xml file? We've thought that a xml file with tags like [text1] [text2] etc is perfect for NPC's text and also for possible quests to give the player. So what are the differences between this two methods? Is a script suitable for this aim? Thanks

Embedding Lua in Java Projects

22 May 2012 - 08:54 AM

i'm searching a way to embedd Lua scripts in java code. I've tried to compile and install LuaJava but I've had the same error message both from Mac and Linux. I've changed the config file properly. It only works with Lua 5.1.1 (i have 5.2 version) ? Any suggestions about LuaJava or other libraries? Thank you!

Why use scripting languages? And which one to use?

Hello, i ve read that using scripting language is usefull in videogame programming (expecially for ARtificial Inteligence), but why? And which is the most suitable scripting language for videogames on a java based game? Thanks
