Topics I've Started

What kind of "Quests" would you like in an MMO/RPG, etc?

14 September 2012 - 05:26 PM

I've been trying to think of new ways to make quests, missions, tasks, or whatever you want to call them, more unique and fun. Most MMO games and RPG's always end up having too many boring quests like - collect this item, pick up this item, take this item to this person, kill this monster, collect this many items by killing this specific monster, get to this point by jumping on these rocks till you reach a point, kill this boss monster, talk to this NPC, now talk to "THIS" NPC, etc. It's actually really hard to make new variations of these "quests" because MMO's and RPG's always seems to have the same type of game mechanics in some way or variation like crafting, farming, killing monsters, etc.

So my question is, if you could make a quest of your own and had to make it in a game with the same type of game play and mechanics used in most games today what would you require the player to accomplish or do? (This includes any sort of task any NPC would require the player to do, big or small, story related or not).

What kind of new game mechanic or new twist would you like to introduce to make quests different? Would be great if you could detail your answer as much as possible so we can all understand what you are trying to imagine.

Weekly Community Concept

20 January 2012 - 09:30 AM

My hobby is making game, web, and story concepts. I create them on my own. So many people here talk about ideas and methods for game design, so I was wondering if anybody would be willing to making a community game design document. Not a completely detailed finished concept just a raw fun to make concept. I'll just pick a random theme, write down some rules to follow and post it on google docs. I think it would be fun and I am willing set it up if anyone wants to participate. We could create a new one with a new theme each week. Comment or post if you think this sounds fun or interesting to you.

Item/Equipment/Monster Rarity

14 September 2011 - 09:50 PM

I have been trying to make up a rarity system that works for Items, Equipment, and Monsters. I have been able to come up with a few ways of doing it, but most are just so similar to other games. Usually a game will have a different color representing rarity, a +1 to +10 system, a naming system, etc. I was planning on just using common, uncommon, rare, and legendary with each name having a varying color to represent the rarity. I tried to look up item rarity systems for other games, but it wasn't that easy and it seemed like I would have to download or play several games to find out. I also am not happy with the rarity system I have come up with so far. So I came here to ask if any of you could think back on all the games you have played and help me out by trying to list the rarity systems from the lowest rarity to highest rarity whether it be by color, name, number, etc.

It would also help if you could give input on which kind of rarity system you like and worked best for you. To me I believe the best ones out there are the ones that allow players to spot and know its a rare or non rare item the second they see it without having to scan through all the stats.
