Looking for some books

Hello everyone,



now that I have finished my exams this semester I have some time now to focus on more fun things so I visited the library of my university and I was really suprised to find alot of books for software development even newer ones. (fun fact: I found a book about the "new" C98 Standard...).


Next semester I want to go to a computer AI course and was wondering if anyone has a good book recommandation about AI for beginners.


I'm also looking for a good C++ book which explains the new features and designs of C++11 because this knowledge is required for the course.

anyone can recommend this book?



Please give me some adivces thx :)


Modern C++ looking for information

Hey everyone,


after working for 5 years with Java in my current job and in my hobby projects I'm getting tired of writing all my stuff in this language.

I think the time has come to fulfill my dream and start diving deeper into the C universe.


First thing I want to try is to port one of my Java projects into a C++ project. What I am looking for is a guide for code styling, project structure and modern C++ usage.


I'm going to use Visual Studio 2013 and want to take a look at SDL or SFML for the start. Any good advice for a Java developer exploring the big world of C/C++ language?


I'd would be really grateful if someone can share his knowledge with me or post intresting links.

Construct 2 experience?

Hey everyone,


for my next Project I want to step into HTML5 game development. I want to create a 2D game and came across Construct 2 which looks pretty neat.


-Cross Platform

-Simple editor

-Javascript SDK for custom additions.


For my game I also want to implement multiplayer functionality.

The requirment is, that two players should get matched and then duel against each other.


Anyone got experience using Construct 2 and maybe also created a multiplayer game with it?

I'd really like to hear some opinions.

"MMO" What to store in database?

Hey everyone,


I recently started a project in my free time, which is about constructing a very very simple mmo 3-tier architecture (for a max player count of 100).

I came to the point where I have to decide what data can be stored in the backend (MySQL). Constantly storing a players position seems unefficient to me.

The same goes for item properties like damage, item level and other.


I wonder how this thing would be done by an expert. My idea was to store player data only if something happend (like level up) and save players position every 5 minutes or something.


For the item properties part, i thought of a construction, that the item data may be stored in the backend, but initialy loaded once the server starts up. So the item properties would be stored in the memory of the server. If I change something at runtime of an item, this item could be reloaded again.


I hope you understand what I am trying to do and maybe you can give me tips or links to some articles.

Simple 2D Physics

Hey Everyone,


Im just playing around with Java and Slick2D and try to create a small Physics simulation.

At the moment I just want have a simple ball falling from the top of the screen to the bottom.

I want the ball to have some kind of rebound from the ground but I have no idea how I could accomplish that.


for the moment my Shape update and fall physics look like this (Which is a Cube at the moment).

I could not find any good tutorials about physics on google so im trying to find some advices or hints here
