Would you kindly take a look and critique my portfolio?

  • I think one of my biggest problems is me not actually showing any code.
  • I do not have enough flavor text to discuss my roles in each project. Perhaps I should actually expand each game/project, (with different screenshots, and maybe screenshots of code? that will look pretty :)

The university that seems like a very viable option for me is only offering a B.A. in Multimedia Studies. Should I look for another university that offers a traditional CS degree? Is it that important, or would the B.A. in MS be enough to at least get me looks?

During development the best way I think is to get in touch with your friends, post some facebook messages etc, to borrow some devices, or get such friend to meet for a beer and try to run your game on their devices. Or buy one. Test it as much as you can, because differences between android devices are far more unpredictable as you might imagine.

 

This. There are a LOT of forums dedicated for testing, just sleuth around. The model is generally, "Test my game and I'l test yours!". It's very useful and it works because everyone is happy.

Guys really? I mean, I'd make him consider HTML5/JS if I were you, and since he has MySQL/PHP experience I'd figure he has some webdev experience. C, C++, Java is all too complex for a starter IMHO.

IHMO GoF's Design Patterns is a very BAD starting place, especially for a beginner. Remember, he is asking for a good OOP book, not a design patterns book, which are a totally different beast.

 

You don't really need a book to learn OOP, but if you insist:
  • Object Oriented Analysis and Design With Applications (Grady Booch)
  • Object Oriented Software Construction (Bertrand Meyer)

Javascript (with/without JQuery) is the way to go.
