Real Time Combat in MMOS

I have very limited knowledge in networking and multiplayer and I am wondering in how much time will it be possible to make MMOs with real time combat. for example an MMO FPS with around 5000 people at a time on each server.

What do you think of this game design Bachelors degree with Major.
