Best 3d modelling software for beginners?

24 June 2012 - 02:18 PM

Hi All!

So i recently asked a question "UDK or Unity, the best engine for beginners?" And as i explored Unity a little more i realized i'll need a 3d modelling software. From Autodesk i can get a free software and spent 2 hours downloading Autodesk Maya 2013 and reached a corrupted files message when installing after the download, so i figured i'd start over and figure out which one is best.

So for a beginner, which 3d modelling software do you think is the easiest, most helpful, and with some pretty good features?

i've heard of a few

3ds max

(getting sidetracked: did anyone else try to download Maya 2013 and get a corrupted files message and to redownload?)

Thank you for all the info, as you help my journey as an indie game dev. greatly!

Which language to learn, and what to do with it for unity?

16 June 2012 - 08:31 PM

Hi all!

Like in previous posts here, I'm brand new to the industry and with the answers on those topics suggesting to learn a program language (or at least the basics) I'm confused at which one, and what to do with it.

If I want to put an arcade mode that's similar to tower defense on the main menu, how would I do that? Would I need to code that all? If I wanted to create customizations, and unlocks, and hidden secrets In levels, would I need to code that?

Basically, I have NO knowledge of programming and I'm clueless to even know what to do with it. Or what I can do with it. If I want to create a catapult, how would I code that? If I want Said catapult to be customizable, do I have to code that?

You don't have to answer these questions if you don't know how, I'm really looking for what language to use and what I could do with it, alon with an example or so if that's possible.

Any advice to a true beginner would be great!

How was this game created?

Hi everyone!

I'm wondering how the game Catapult Kings for the iphone was created. How do you set up menus and how do you add nice animations and kingdoms and such?

How would i create this game?

15 June 2012 - 05:34 PM

Hi All!

So i am starting to learn UnityScript to help myself with Unity, but i'm just generally confused when it comes to actually creating a game.

So here is the general idea of the game: You control a catapult and the idea is to destroy the other castle, but by doing that, there is so much more. Customization, building up your catapult, unlocking different catapult balls, etc. But how do i do this? how do i create this game? how can i create a character or the catapult? i have so many questions!

Look at Catapult Kings for ios for an example! by the way, how does Chillingo create its games?

UDK or Unity? The best game engine for beginners?

14 June 2012 - 07:21 PM

Hi all!

I just started out in my indie game dev. Adventure and downloaded Unity, but the thought came in mind: which engine is better?

I read a comment that, and I quote "if you're new to the industry, the cryengine will bend you over and smack you till you cry" sounds hard!

But then I saw the Unreal Development Kit, and since Literal Epic Games have been created on it, and with some awesome lookin features, how does this compare to Unity?

I really want to test out the Unreal Development kit but I just downloaded Unity, so I want to know exactly which one will be better for me, as a complete beginner, and which one is easier!

Thank you so much,
