What kind of demos do the companies want from a graphics programmer's portfolio?

Specifically what kind of graphical features should I use in my portfolio for breaking into the industry as a graphics programmer?

Is it possible to break into the industry as a graphics programmer? or generally not? I mean, generally the graphics programmers have begun being graphics programmers or they just began lower? Lower = GUI programmer, and so on. (Sorry for being supercilious sad.png )

OpenGL core profile question

I'm trying to learn the modern opengl with the core profile (+3.x) but I don't know the best way to initialize the opengl extensions.


Glew was a headache for me. I initialized it (and enabled glew experimental) but for some reason I had problems generating vertex arrays. I think it's because I defined the opengl profile to core profile with glfw, but I'm not sure.


There is a good opengl core profile tutorial? 


By the way, I'm using windows 7 64bits with Visual C++ 2010 express.

I am trying to learn the right way to make dynamic classes for a engine like rendering system using direct3d 11.

Is there another good open source engine using direct3d?
