Networked Game

10 January 2013 - 07:55 PM

Okay so. I'm working on a project for University. It's an FPS.

I have made a basic server and the client and server can communicate via UDP (fairly simple stuff)

My question basically is, how should I deal with sending data from the client to the server and broadcasting the data of all players back to the client.

I've never really done anything like this before so it's all new to me.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Networking A Game

27 November 2012 - 11:46 AM

Okay so I'm taking this courses while I'm abroad and our final big project is to build a game (which is fine) and network it.

The latter is my concern. We had a lecture / lab on building a echo server in C which i got most of I guess. But now I'm not sure how I'm suppose to mold this to help me network my game.

The game is developed using a scripting language developed by the college (which has heavy hints of C++).

I'm not looking for you guys to 'do my homework for me' I'd just appreciate some step in the right direction.

If you need to know anything just let me know.

UDK + Character models

09 October 2012 - 06:52 AM

So guys. I've been learning to use the UDK and been messing around with kismet and matinee and all that other stuff.
I feel confident in it, but still only at a beginners level.

My question is. I kinda want to get custom characters and learn how to load them in and all that stuff.
I have 3D's Max installed, but I haven't used it before. Is it worth deviating and learning how to make custom characters and loading them in. Or should I concentrate on learning UDK more and more until it becomes like programming 2D games (which for me, I can do to a Intermediate -> Advanced level)?

I look forward to all your opinions and suggestions.

wolfenstein 3D (How To)

01 October 2012 - 11:46 AM

So I'm trying to explore more methods of making games for experience.

And a friend of mine can make raycasting games quite well (Like Wolfenstein).

However He tried to explain how the code works and he just failed. Also I've checked a few places Online but theory doesn't work with me unless I see the code explained.

Can any of you wonderful GameDev people Help me out.

Maybe with some pointers (not 0x00000000) or some pseudo code examples to explain to me how to get at least a floor and ceiling done.

I hope someone can help.

:D

My LudumDare24 Entry

27 August 2012 - 01:03 PM

Hey everyone.

I decided to do Ludum Dare 24. These forums have helped me a lot in games development and this is the first time I made a game all by myself fully along with assets and music, by myself, and it was tough to do in 24 hours.

I just got a barely playable game entered, but the experience was what it was all about.

My main job is programming boring apps. and I've only recently decided to take up game development (probably quite old for a 22 year old)

Anyway, If you guys wanna check it out, the Download link is below:

http://www.torqscrewsoftware.co.uk/ftp/Rovolution.zip

should I continue to work on this?

In case you are not familiar with Ludum Dare, its a game programming competition where you make a game in 48 hours Alone , and try to do it to a voted theme, This theme was EVOLUTION.
