I think he ment that you can just replace every LPDIRECT3DTEXTURE9 in your code with IDirect3DTexture9*.

LPDIRECT3DTEXTURE9 is nothing more than a typefef for IDirect3DTexture9*

In general you write it like this:
UINT numPasses = 0;
mFX->Begin(&numPasses, 0);

Like FLEBlanc said, DirectX will fill the variable you are passing in, with the amount of passes.
