Top-Down Driving Game

Hi, I am creating a top down "gta like" driving game in openGL with simple triangles, I currently have the "car", I am interested in what sort of algorithyms and patterns people use to impliment things like, cornering, breaking and inertia. Please point me in the right direction for what I would find usefull.
