Annoying ad - with speech!

16 August 2013 - 10:22 AM

I clicked on one of the "go to forum" links at the bottom of the thread.

Twice now I've had an annoying "Dear gamedev.net visitor" ad open a new tab asking me to complete a survey, with speech as well, which makes it doubly annoying.

I don't want to do a survey that opens new tabs in my browser and speaks, please get rid.

I also seem to have an issue with posting new threads (and looking at PMs) in that it seems to hang the browser in a "loading" loop for so long I have to cancel the page load and try it again by refreshing... I can't be the only one with this issue? I'm using Firefox. EDIT: I've had this issue for a while though, not just since I got this annoying ad.

EDIT: Hmm, it appears to be something to do with a plugin called "Webcake ads" which installed itself when I installed open office, it is underlining a lot of words in posts which presumably take me to other ads. I'll disable that right away!

Anyone know the probability density function for this?

07 August 2013 - 06:55 PM

*Not really gamedev related, but question was asked on retro games site (world of spectrum, for ZX Spectrum nostalgia)*

Let's say I have a piece of string of length 1. I make N cuts in the string (cut positions are made from a uniform(0, 1) distribution), what is the probability density function for the length of the N+1 pieces? (Note: I make all the cuts at once, I don't make a cut, discard a piece, make another cut in what is left, etc.)

It's pretty obvious the mean is going to be 1/N and from a simulation done (in ZX Basic, lol) looks to me like the limiting pdf is going to be the exponential distribution with lambda = 1/N.

The constraint is that if x0, x1, ..., xn are the lengths of the pieces then x0 + x1 + ... + xn = 1

Over to you guys! I'm sure there must be a name for this distribution but a quick look at the 144 continuous pdf's on wikipedia hasn't shown up anything.

Legendary Spectrum coder Joffa Smith dead :(

26 June 2010 - 06:02 AM

Jonathan "Joffa" Smith died today.

He was responsible for some of the best games on the ZX Spectrum computer (very popular in the UK), including "Green Beret", "Hyper Sports" and "Cobra".

Rest in peace Jof, you will be missed.

Retro coding forum?

24 February 2010 - 07:58 AM

Hi, long time no see ;) Is there a retro forum here? All the cool cats are reworking 8-bit games on the original platforms. Well, some of them are. All I have is worldofspectrum.org, but 8-bitters should band together! PS: Your menus at the top of the browser need some looking at by the way, took me ages to use them to navigate to the forums. ;)

Super Mario Galaxy subliminal messaging

Ha ha, just saw a discussion of this on the web, the sparkles in the corner of the letters spell out UR MR GAY. I'm amazed people notice stuff like this. Do you think the logo will be changed because of this. I think it is funny in a childish sort of way anyway.
