http://unity3d.com/ is both easy to get started in and very flexible with its .net scripting but UDK is also good.

#5009455 dramatic fps drop when using transparent texture

Your fps will always be garbage in intermediate mode, try using a draw list or vbo.

No no no no no.

Immediate mode is slower than the other methods for sure, but it's not that much slower. You don't get such dramatic framerate drops from it, particularly with such a simple scene (as polycounts really ramp up it's expected, but with basic scenes it's performance is roughly equivalent to the others). Remember - Quake used immediate mode and didn't suffer overly much from it.

Please don't recommend VBOs (or display lists) as a "solution" every time you see immediate mode code - the real cause of the problem may very well be elsewhere (as, indeed, it was in this case).

I'm not advising that it's OK to use immediate mode here, by the way; I am recommending that you should properly diagnose the problem before recommending a solution, rather than jump to conclusions.

Graphics card makers only optimize their hardware for vbo's these days so its not unreasonable to assume legacy functions can cause all sorts of performance problems.

#4991345 Are open pvp + full loot SANDBOX mmorpg's still possible?

At minimum, you should describe why it won't work, and listen to people as they take your advice and see if they can use it to come up with a solution.

No solution will work when your 'wolves' are the same people who will abuse log outs and alternate accounts to avoid any consequences for their actions.

You'r confusing actual competitive gameplay like team fortress 2/ counter strike / league of legends with being a griefing dirtbag.

#4949877 Why do shops have limited money in Skyrim and Fallout?

The ability to barter items for items helps keep loot somewhat useful while discourage the player from hording gold though makes it frustrating when npc's demand more gold than physically exists in the world for their services.

Another good one:

Isn't that slightly undermined by the paychecks and tuition coming from by tax dollars.
If you want everyone to literally follow that example your basically advocating communism.

DDT's an interesting one. There's a body of opinion that banning it has killed more people (from malaria) than using it would have done. That is; although it's dangerous, it's better than the mosquitos having a good time.

Except that's a lie, DDT was only banned for agricultural use in developed nations. DDT was only stopped for anti malaria use in undeveloped countries because of DDT resistant mosquitoes.

Seems like its about 10 years too late to be useful.

#4819929 What's it like to start making Flash games coming from C++?

Posted by on 05 June 2011 - 06:50 PM

If your from a programming background my sugestion is don't make flash games, make flex games.
Flex is a stand alone action script compiler that will let you make a swf without flash.

flash develop is a free ide that works well for me.

flixel is a game library for flex/flash, its a bit limited but very easy to learn.

#4812146 What is the most immersive game you have played?

Posted by on 17 May 2011 - 05:04 PM

Mass Effect because gameplay and story work together instead of one killing the other. I like how even during exposition I feel like I'm doing something instead of just watching.
For me to feel true immersion I need a good story and interesting world unlike most western games but I also need the story told through gameplay and environments instead of relying on long cut scenes like most Japanese games do.
