Topics I've Started

I want to get involved Where to Start?

12 December 2011 - 01:41 PM

Hi,

I know there are quite a few topics with similar titles, but I wanted some guidance for my particular situation. I'm interested in creating and/or being a part of a team creating a game. Programming is not my line of expertise, however. I'm more of a designer/ artist when it comes to games. I have an idea for a 2d iso rts that I'd like to get made into a game but I'm not sure how to go about finding the right people to pitch it to. I have some graphics made so people can get a feel for the game's look because I know people are very visual.

I would also like to help with a 3d game project at some point and I'm wondering what skills teams would be looking for to help with something like that. I would also be open to making my own games to start if it's recommended. I have multimedia fusion which can make 2d games. In terms of commitment. I would work on the side of my job, but I would really like to develop games for a living and have wanted to since I was a child. I'm in my late 20's now and I figure it's never too late to start.

Thanks for the help,

Ian

RTS Design doc programming questions

01 December 2006 - 07:07 AM

I'm doing design work and art for a game idea that I recently got accepted by a small commercial company and the guy makes some programming references that I'm not up on concerning my design doc. Is this the right forum for answering those questions? I didn't know if this goes in programming or design. Please forgive my ignorance This is what he said: "I need all the information regarding Data, for the game I am working on the Data Engine..." He also said: "Ian I need all you Data Structure Info asap so I can build the Load and Save Functions" I think I know what he is talking about, but I'm not quite sure how much this covers Additionally he mentioned an existing system that he has, it seems to have all the functionality that I require. "For instance in the new NovA using a Fast loop method I can Change A Units Stats on the fly and save it or load it during realtime It helps in NovA Cause I can Level Up units during Gameplay" Thanks for the help, and your patience.

Otherworld RTS (Need Ideas for Improvement)

21 November 2006 - 06:58 PM

I am trying to put together an RTS. Mine is more WC2(2D) in style however, but I had an idea of recruiting, only you can only recruit the villagers you have, which are auto-generated by the town center(the hub of activity and trade) and the amount is dictated by morale of the populous, resources, and the growth stage of your camp. I'm hoping to eliminate rushing this way as well. Gathering resources will be different as well. Any ideas on that are welcome. This game takes place in the jungle. in addition advanced units will not simply be churned out, they must be taken from existing ones that have reached their highest level- then trained. same with warriors from slaves. food must be harvested, it doesn't just come in neat little farms, it goes into a farm(garden) for the workers, to be stored (therefore food fluctuates) and a tax portion is deducted from the populations foodstores for your army. I don't want to say too much more, but I also have a unique idea ( I think) that involves being able to carry on bases/armies from one scenario to the next, and an Idea of a battlemap so you choose which map you enter next. I'm not quite seeking help yet, because my dilemma is choosing the best medium for this game. Either programming from scratch or using an existing engine or game creation software. I had solicited an MMF forum at one time and while I had people who were interested, I was told that RTS is very difficult using that program. Yet someone else recommended the Stratagus engine on Sourceforge.net I ask that the more experienced users give their opinion as to where they think this game would best fit in. If it helps I am a pixel artist/designer and not a programmer, so any programming would require me to seek help, however I'll probably need to do this with a game creator as well. I did post here a while back, I've done more artwork for the game, but not much time other than that. I'm back at it again however, feed back please. Suggestions, reponses, anything, welcome. Game layout

09 November 2005 - 09:56 AM

My question to the community is if there are any resources on planning the technical aspects of your game, short of buying a book, and including that as well, since I will most likely need one. My point is deciding which components need to be programmed first and the most efficient order of doing those things. Mainly for programming, since it's obvious music and graphics can be implemented last in most cases, with filler in at first. Even though I myself am not a programmer, just vaguely familiar with programming concepts. I have a general idea of what to do, just like to educate myself to become a better planner is all. Thanks in advance, Ian Barefoot

Otherworld RTS

I was interested in the thread on RT not enough S because I myself am building one. Mine is more WC2(2D) in style however, but I had a similar idea of recruiting, only you can only recruit the villagers you have, which are auto-generated by the town center(the hub of activity and trade) and the amount is dictated by morale of the populous, resources, and the growth stage of your camp. I'm hoping to eliminate rushing this way as well. Gathering resources will be different as well. Any ideas on that are welcome. This game takes place in the jungle. All I have is a screenshot and I can give specs from my design doc on my next post. WIP MOCKUP in addition advanced units will not simply be churned out, they must be taken from existing ones that have reached their highest level- then trained. same with warriors from slaves. food must be harvested, it doesn't just come in neat little farms, it goes into a farm(garden) for the workers, to be stored (therefore food fluctuates) and a tax portion is deducted from the populations foodstores for your army. Suggestions, reponses, welcome. I am also looking for programmers, if someone can direct me to the appropriate forum section it would be greatly appreciated.
