Writing games is like riding a bicycle.. that's on fire.
So, a large fraction of today was spent downloading. What did I download? Well:
-> Visual C++ Express 2005
-> Windows Platform SDK
-> DirectX 9.0 SDK (October 2005)
Doesn't sound like much, but between dealing with installation issues and getting the cumbersome 'Windows Genuine Authenticati…

Hey everyone -- I'm back.. again. :)
Lately I've been a bit off the gamedev track for some reason. Probably burnout, because I've been going straight for ages now without much success (read: since Magma Duel). Hopefully I'll settle down soon with a new project, and development will get back on track…

The last few days were spent on finishing up and releasing (finally!) the 0.02 internal release of the RPG I'm developing at GU, Star of Shadows. The release shows off the nifty scripting engine I've written, and a fun little test town with a couple of mildly entertaining quests/NPCs to show off it…
I've already acknowledged that level generation for DoA9 (Downfall of Argos 9 -- new project for those of you tuning in :P) will be one of the most difficult systems of the game. The levels must not only be random, but interesting. That key requisite will probably prove to be the most challenging p…
Big update. Lots to talk about. :)
(Oh, and I've removed the reddish template. I just wasn't enjoying it much on my eyes, and I'm sure that I wasn't alone. :P)

Phew! Finally got a new version of Magma Duel uploaded to the showcase; ready to rumble. The lack of online play is sort of a disappointment, but I'm not labelling the game as 'complete' just yet. I would really like to get a functional online play feature going, even if you're forced to have to en…
I've finally decided to release Magma Duel, with all of the bells/whistles that have been added. It's a big step from the first release, and has a lot more functionality. I'll upload to the GD.NET showcase and post in Your Announcements tomorrow at some point.

In the land of development, I've curbed some frusteration on Magma Duel network programming by getting some work done on the RPG I'm coding with some friends over at GU, with them supplying the artwork/story, Star of Shadows. If you've played any RPGs on any of the 16-bit systems back in the day (S…
Alright, I'm a bit more satisified with this template, although it's still got a shimmer of ugliness in its wake. I can't figure out for the life of me how to change the images for the gamedev.net logo and the blue lines along the top. Ideas?

Welcome to another fun round of: "Why I'm not in Webdesign". :)
Suggestions please. :P

Additionally, the networked movement/action system is in place. The game runs fine if I play two clients locally on a game, but I have yet to host it and play with another (intelligent) being. I'm really excite…

Networking is not that much fun, folks. At least it isn't when you have bugs, and aren't able to pull anyone off MSN to help you test stuff. :/
Today I rewrote the whole game handling (server/client) from UDP to TCP, due to the unreliable nature of UDP. I'm absolutely not relishing the thought of wr…

The last few days have been crowded with woes and worry on the network programming of Magma Duel; hopefully an addition that will give the game a boost of popularity for those who don't always have a friend nearby they can grab. :)

Magma Duel is still trucking along, speedily and steadily. I intend on continuing my full-force development speed until this game is finished!

Rule #1: Don't update your devlog immediately after a coding session. You'll sound dull, vague, and tired. See below entry. :D Give yourself some time to regain consciousness, and allow your semicolon key on the keyboard to stop vibrating from its frequent usage. Aaaah, much better.

Got plenty of work done on Magma Duel tonight. Fixed a number of bugs, added the beginning of network support, and a few headaches on the scoring system.
I had a particularly nasty time getting the scoring screen to fade in properly. You see, Magma Duel wasn't coded in a very 'clean' fashion, so the…

Judging by the feedback I got upon releasing Magma Duel, I've decided that there's a whole lot of work that can be done on it before I can truly call it a 'completed' project. Thus, I have concluded to pick up my copy of Delphi once more and dub Magma Duel my primary project. ;)

Yesterday I placed Magma Duel on the GD Showcase after having it sit around on my harddrive for 9 months. Hopefully I'll get some pleasant feedback, or some people will gain some enjoyment out of it. :)

My roguelike that I will be developing, Kainwall, will receive updates/news reports at that blog, rather than here. Why? Because I'm somesort of blog freak, that's why. Actually, it's because this roguelike will most likely take the better part of several years to write, so I'd rather keep a long-t…
Me and my artist/designer have babbled about it long enough -- a roguelike is to be born under our hands! So far we've always made small games that are arcade-esque such as Meteorites and Gundown, and lack anysort of deeper gameplay or content. I'm a reasonable fellow, I like content. In fact, noth…
Wow. I know it's not much really, but I'm so pleased with the feedback I've gotten on my last game, Gundown. Not just Rob's nice words in the feedback, but on the few other forums I showed it on. I know it's nothing near some of the amazing stuff that I see GD.NET members (and indie'ers) pull off o…
Looks like this blog is back and 'happening'. My GD.NET+ account is being reactivated as I speak, and so will my activity around here!

As much as I love supporting GD.NET by subscribing and using their cool blog features (and custom schemes!), I'd rather support the home-front over at onGameDev by maintaining my blog over there. Nothing personal, but don't worry, I'll still be poking my nose around the forum; offering advice, crit…
Yes, an update! ;)
It looks like my tinkerings with C# over the last year have finally come in handy. I was directed to SDL.NET, a very cool SDL 'port' to .NET that takes advantage of the numerous OOP features that the CLI offers. The author seems to have done some work with Randy Ridge (author of t…

Last night I came across the recently-released IDE/compiler/language, BlitzMax, an updated off-shoot of the widely known BlitzBasic. Hold on there. According to many common generalizations of BlitzBasic users, I have just undergone an instantaneous transformation into a 14-year-old kid who knows no…
I lied. Time constraints and unexpected interruptions ruined my planned development time and as a result only a threadbare sidescroller engine was begun. This saddens me, but somehow I think I'll get over the urge to suffocate myself with an Amulet of Strangulation +1. Somehow. Here's an image of h…
Alright, so here's the deal: a gamedev forum that I admin on, onGameDev, is running a game contest that began in March-ish and ends on Tuesday. I've been a procrastinating bum and haven't done anything at all yet. Here's the plan: write a complete shooter game (shooter being the genre of the contes…
The other day I was sitting down getting generally frusterated over the stereotypes floating around about game development. The silliness of me doing this aside, I was mainly focusing on the misconception that people use high-level tools like game-creators or high-level programming langauges (DarkB…
Writing and maintaining a blog is no small task. Nay, nay. It requires a passion for mediocrity and a desire for lack-luster writing. And most of all, it needs to be interesting. Ideally I will fulfill only the last requisite.
