Well I was happy with the 128MB JumpDrive keychain until I was thinking well maybe that's not such a good idea what if I drop my keys or go near magnets or it rains or...
So I was looking online and I found out that SD cards go up to 4GB now! and they're much smaller than pendrives even! they are as big as a postage stamp and I already have a 64MB one for my palm but I looked online and found that my m505 palm can only reliably handle 1GB SD cards so I immediately of course went to Circuit City and bought a 1GB Secure Digital card :)
Yesterday I mounted the 64MB SD card to slackware as /dev/sda1 so now I have both a SD and usb pendrive backup storage! :) But the tiny SD card is 8 x as big as the pendrive one :D And I can just put it inside my pda anyways so it'll be more secure than the pendrive I think. I couldn't get my compact flash drive to mount in slack yet though :( and I haven't tried the MM card drive yet because my old MP3 player won't spit out the card its jammed in there :/ And I still have to get my old serial Wacom Tablet to work and I was reading about it and wow it lookks complicated so I'll probably procrastinate about that until I need to draw something o_O
I'm still only on chapter 2 of my Palm OS Game Programming book because I've been playing around too much with zsnes =(
But I plan on reading it right now. Here's a pic of my new SD 1GB card :)
So now that I don't have any MS Windows and I can't finish reading the 2 MS Windows specific books anymore I started to read this book again.
I started reading this book a while back and only got to chapter 6 and couldn't get the samples to ever compile after I even bought CodeWarrior 9 for MS Windows ($400!! o.O). It was the thought of one day making palm os programs that really got me back into computer stuff. And the past year or so I've strayed from it after realizing I needed to know more C++ and stuff. But now I might be ready for it again ... I hope.
I spent many hours today trying to figure out how to get prc-tools to work on linux >. I like seeing pics in other peoples blogs so because I don't have an amazing developer project to take screen shots of I'm going to post any pic I can take with my verizon phone =)
Now I'm thinking maybe I could try and make a tiny Pet Store Tycoon for palmos!! :) But I think I'll try something simpler first like a stock market game or something. I just can't wait until I'm finally making palmos apps...it's been my dream for almost a year.
Last night I was playing with Tcl and I started reading a great interactive tutorial I found online. I used to know some tcl a while ago but I forgot it. I kinda like how Tk is simple to make GUIs and can be crossplatform and also since I don't have VC++ anymore :/ But in a couple days my wxWidgets book will get here and I hope it's as easy as Tk then I'll never go back to MFC.
My receipt says I can't return software so I don't know what I'll do with this Win XP HE. I don't want to ruin my pcs after I spent all this time reinstalling stuff. But since it won't install on my pcs and it has an activation code and stuff I didn't use at all I might try and eBay it. It cost me $199/+tx so I hope I could get half of that but I doubt it...who the hell wants Win XP Home Edition? :(
I bought a 128MB jump drive/pen drive before my 200GB HD died but I didn't use it yet and then it died (the HD). So now I'm going to use it as my backup and small file transfer storage device :)
My laptop HD came yesterday and it installed easily but again win XP Home Edition wouldn't install on my laptop either so I installed FreeBSD on it instead. And I have two slackwares running perfectly now with patches and customized and firewalls :) It's aggravating how many people scan my computer though I didn't realize how many people run bots probably all day looking for zombie machines to control >:(
I out grew that stuff long ago ^_^' Now I have to find out who this one person is in San Diego that keeps trying to scan my other pc for win-sharing *rolls eyes* and block his isp ranges. My cable company on this pc is constantly scanning port 80 to make sure I'm not running any webservers :/ They don't like that I asked already.
It took a while to get the exact fs mounted between 3 computers for my pendrive because one linux is using /dev/sdb while the other uses /dev/sda and yet the fbsd uses /dev/da0 o_O luckily though I can just make them all mount to /mnt/pendrive and use the same ext2 filesystem. I still don't know how I'm going to make MS Windows games (pet Store Tycoon) without a version of MS Windows =( I even installed WINE but it couldn't even play my MFC tic-tac-toe game...
Also, I got my pda (m505 palmos) to link with my slow linux pc. Of course it'd be too good if kpilot worked :/ But the pilot-link stuff works but I had to do a backup manually.
pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB1 -b /bleh
but it works... *shrug*
between 3 brand new posix installations I havent read any of my game programming book at all :( I did play around with configuring Kate to be my main gui editor for my laptop in fbsd though and compiled some simple C++ programs :)
I can't wait until my wxWidgets book comes here so I can try and make a simple GUI frontend for pilot-link library stuff. I was looking at their main site and it's down and some other site had old information like maybe nobody updates it anymore? Maybe because supposedly palmos is dying from MS moving in, I dunno. But I still use my m505 and if kpilot won't even work correctly i doubt the pythong/java GUI front ends I saw online will work without headaches.
I havent even attempted to get my webcam or my real digital cam's SD card or the MM card to mount on any on my pcs yet so all I had to take a pic of my pendrive is my cellphone and it takes lousy pics but here is my new backup system it's as small as two cigarettes and I placed it on a screen shot of my freshly installed slack ^_^'
now i'm going to get some ice cream at 31 flavors (they're open all night :D
Well, I did plan on trying to finish my VC++ book. And a few days ago I walked in the park and brought my C++ book and read a couple chapters in it (it's a book I've already read though, an easy C++ book) and that was a great day to for other reasons. And I also read a couple chapters in my new Beginning Game Programming book a couple days ago too...
Then my floppy drive didn't work and I thought maybe from cat hair inside it that's why the button didn't pop out. So I cleaned a lot (3 hours!) and took apart my computer to clean it too. There was some cat hair in there and a lot of dust. And then my hardrive didn't boot up and it made really loud crackling noises :/ This was my one MS Windows computer too. And I didn't do any back up at all!!! I even bought a bunch of blank CD-RWs and blank DVD+Rs a few weeks ago but I didn't back anything up because the one movie I burned took almost 2hrs and I was lazy and didn't burn anything else since. And then I took my computer apart again and the hardrive is completely corrupted! 100GB of data lost!! :(
It is a 200GB HD and it was half full ::edited out:: o.O but more important to me was some personal files like pictures and source code to my little projects and web site files. I don't have a host I took my web sites down and lost all my files! The only thing I have is an old back up from a couple months ago to some of the web site files. I lost my VC++ tic-tac-toe source code! :(
I was so mad. I'm so dumb not to have backed up all my stuff...not even talking about ::edited out:: :D
So after a lot of testing and going to the Western Digital site to download diagnostic stuff for the HD (luckily my bf has a windows computer I could use) I went out and bought a 300GB HD and because I didn't have any restore discs I had to buy a downgrade of MS Windows XP Home Edition for $199!! And the HD was $199 too...and I'm poor!
My laptop HD still hasn't come yet but they sent an email Monday saying it would get here in a few days....hopefully later today. I had XP Media Center Edition before but now I have nothing.
So I installed the 300GB HD and tried to install XP but I kept getting the Blue Screen! I partitioned it to 137GB too and still it won't install! I hate trying to get people on the phone because they don't know anything. BTW, before I bought the HD and XP Home Edition I called HP and they charged me $40 for a 2 week warranty and they didn't do anything but say try pressing F2, try pressing F8....they didnt fix anything the diagnostic software I downloaded said my HD was really messed up though.
So I don't have any MS Windows anymore to finish my books! The books I'm reading all require MS Windows... :/
So I rearranged all my computers (I have 3 besides the laptop) and finally got completely clean and UPDATED slackwares and the old fbsd I'm going to erase soon maybe.
It took me the past 2 days to get to this point o.O Because I had to go buy a new mouse because my wireless optical keyboard/mouse wasn't working correctly in X. And I looked all over the internet and still couldn't fix it.
Yes, I am now extremely familiar with xorg.conf and know the exact stats of my hardware -.-
the good news though is this computer now works fine with cable internet and has all the past month of so security patches and the sound works :) and I installed a firewall software for it. and then I wiped my other computer and put identical slackwares on them.
I hope when I get my laptop HD it will install easily and it will work again (I'm not even sure that the laptop just isnt broken besides the HD). And I'll try and install the MS Win XP Home Edition on my laptop. I actually bought CodeWarrior 9.x! over $400 in anticipation I'd know how to make palm os programs by now >. I did a complete nmap scan of both my firewalled, patched, updated, clean slackware 10.1s and they both are fine :) Stopped rc.sshd and rc.inetd and am fairly confident that I'm as hacker proof as i can get :p
I miss having MS Windows a little bit though. I used to play my games and download a lot of stuff on it. And all the books for game programming assume MS Windows. If I didn't want to make MS Windows games I'd just be happy with my two linux and even switch my fbsd to slackware(which I might anyways) but I spent a lot of time already reading about MFC and MS Windows specific stuff like VC++ IDE that I don't want to just forget about MS Windows completely!
Another good thing though is that I think I was wrong about not being able to handle a httpd. I might get DSL to go with my cable and run my own web server afterall. Configuring apache isn't nearly as hard as I thought before my intense two days with slackware.
I read that other distros are easier to use and boy Knoppix seemed it but slack seems fine once I got everything done.
I found out the hard way that you shouldn't just 'upgradepkg xx' Better to let Kpackage uninstall and then do a install from a *.tgz :D
Well, this has nothing to do with game development but so far neither do I. I even lost my tic-tac-toe source code I spent hours making the AI from scratch and the *.wav files and the icons. If I didn't upload it on here to my members area I wouldn't even have a binary of it. :(
Even with having to immediately upgrade security packages and install firewall rules and half of my 'plug n play' isn't...free linux is still an easier install than expensive MS Windows! When my mouse didn't work I could 'pico /etc/X11/xorg.conf' and edit it. In XP if it doesn't install you get a blue screen and it says call technical support..!!
I did make a little c++ program but it's nothing much :) just testing g++
Not going to correct all the red text I'll just go...
edit: Ok maybe I shouldn't add this but... Well when I called HP first, they transferred me around and made me give them the same information over and over and I couldn't even understand what any of them were saying half the time because ::edited out:: -.-;
edit 2: Hey now I miss LiveJournal and am going to sign up again ^_^'
edit 3: No I'm not (I hate LJ now). Wow, I have 3 computers and I can't even play my own little tic-tac-toe game I made because I don't have MS Windows. Thats weird..
closest thing I've made to a game after almost 10 months :(
But I am pretty happy because I like buying stuff :)
I was thinking about buying a new laptop because mine died a couple years ago and never really though about it much since now. But instead of buying a new one and being broke I went to a web site I found and bought a harddrive for it 30GB for only $80. That isnt as bad as buying a new laptop. I just hope it works ok and is easy to install it. I never installed a laptop hardrive before. My laptop when I power it on says "Operating System not found." And it doesn't read the harddrive at all in the diagnostics area. So I'm hoping (after I read some tech forums) that it just needs a new hardrive and then it'll work again. It's kind of old only a pIII but it's not too bad and better than the one that runs my fbsd :D
While I was playing with it again I installed something I found online called BG-Rescue Linux. It fits on 2 floppy disks and even has VI (which I can never remember how to exit correctly ^_^) but I wish it had pico I like that one much better and its easier.
Also I went to the bookstore and I bought 2 books. One is Beginning Game Programming and I read the first chapter already :) The other is a learning Korean (hangul? :) one because I'm korean and I dont know it and I should ^_^'
Also, I finally finished one of the many books I was sort of reading but not really reading "The Indie Game Development survival Guide" I really liked it. It gave me some motivation and was so easy to read compared to C++ code books. I was planning on reading another 10 books or so until I tried a game programming book, but instead I'm just going to read this new one I bought. I don't care I might not be completely ready for it I can't just wait forever and maybe I am ready for it now.
I'm not sure if I'm going to run my own web server afterall. It seems like a lot of work and I don't want to have to worry about people hacking my ftpd, sshd, httpd, every dam day. I still might down the road but just not this month. I'm going to wait to put my domains back up too. I also bought a nice shirt at the mall and I needed one badly and I still need a couple more but I can't wait until it gets slightly cooler here because I have more cooler weather outfits that are great eventhough I love the hot weather too. I have a lot of really nice stuff for Fall stuff. And today was a gorgeous day today too.
For almost a year now I've been putting game or app ideas down on paper as I get them and dating them. At first I had a bunch of ideas then not so many...but lately I've been getting them again.
My latest idea is the one I'm thinking about making my next project. I call it Pet Store Tycoon. Pretty self explanatory I guess :D I just don't think there is one yet and I would like to play it. It doesn't seem too hard to make especially in a few more books.
This auto spell checking is pretty impressive and embarrassing at the same time :)
I'm sure I have some typos too but I'm not going to correct them all because I'm getting tired. I might not post so much again until I have a Pet Store Tycoon demo/screenshot to post! So maybe a month or so :) Or maybe my Columns/crosswords hybrid idea I got yesterday, hmm? o.O
I just read a bunch of other gamedev journals a little bit.
I sux. =/
Other people are more advanced and actually are working on real games and have screen shots.
All I did today was walk around NYC with bf a little. It was eh...
I can't write about my political views because then people will hate me if I am honest and talk about how ::edited out:: ...oops I didn't just say that :D
I don't have any game project I'm working on yet and I even already forgot how I made tic-tac-toe a few months ago o.O
I've been reading about four books at the same time kinda for a while now not really reading any of them actually that much. I wish I had a game to put on the showcase but I don't :( I don't even know why they let me write in here.
I've been at this trying to make real games for almost a year now and I haven't really made anything at all. Earlier today I was thinking about reading some C++ but instead I resigned up for EverQuest II and played for about 30min then stopped. It's still boring as ever. I can't focus anymore to read C++. It's boring. And the book I have kind of read a lot of lately isn't really for me yet its more of the business side of making a game and well I can't even make good games yet. I'm thinking about as my next test project making 'columns'. But having a journal to show how much of a beginner I am is kind of embarassing when in other people's journals they are making real 3d games and writing books or something. Instead of this journal motivating me to read more C++ stuff or work on a game all I've been doing is reading this web site more (I usually only popped in once a month if that).
So yesterday I called a local ISP and I am getting a DSL line just to host my web sites with (in about a week or so) I already have cable and a dial-up (my bf also uses the dial-up when he's not on though I sometimes use it). I have a linux and a freebsd and a winxp computers right here and all I do with my linux is surf sites and check my email lately so instead of trying to get a co-location or dedicated web hosting plans from somebody i'll just get a new connection and run my own sites :)
I was playing with Apache on the linux yesterday and I set it up already its not that hard afterall. And I restarted SSHd and FTPd to go along with the HTTPd. I turned them off long ago for security. And my software firewall I configured and uncommented this and that to get PHP working and everything =) *beams proudly*
I doubt I'll try and sell any hosting space to strangers but at least I can put my few domains up again. It's basically the same price as if I signed up for a dedicated hosting plan with some reseller. And I can upgrade the speed any time I want the ISP guy said. And this local ISP doesn't mind if I run a web server unlike my cable and dial-up ISPs. He said it'll be an extra $30/mo though to have a block of 4 IPs and only two are usable? I still have a bit to learn. Like how to set up BIND to have my custom IPs as nameservers. But I like the idea of having the web sites I own 2ft away from me instead of 1000s of miles away with out telnet/ssh access even like I had with my old host! I'll probably only turn on the SSHd on occassion anyways. I'm kind of paranoid now though that maybe I won't be able to handle the security part. And what if somebody tries to hack into my little domains? -.- that will suck. My slackware is already setup for running daemons though. but maybe I should use freebsd instead of linux? I dunno.
Went out with bf tonight and walked around and got icecream again. We've done that about 3 times this week. I love doing it :D And he doesn't as much but i make him go with me its fun to walk around and the weather has been great lately.
All day I didn't read any C++ stuff or do anything productive really but I watched Fight Club again. I want to for fun make a 2D vampire girl type of game kind of a cross between Final Fantasy and Pokemon but with just one character a girl vampire and possibly with pets? I've never seen a game out there like that and one day I'll make it! I hope. But I have to learn a lot more stuff and read stuff but lately I haven't been reading anything or programming anything :(
I kind of was hoping that this journal would help motivate me to read some C++ stuff. But...maybe tomorrow...
So I had a web host hosting my little sites and I wasn't happy with them that much. I did some checking and found out that my little hosting company was a reseller. So, I dropped my host because they were down sometimes anyways and tech support wasn't that great. And I was thinking "Hey i could be a reseller too.". So I signed up with a reseller after only searching around a few sites and boy did their setup look familiar! I did some checking and I'm pretty sure my old host was a reseller of them. And I did more checking and found out that my new reseller, that I rashly signed up with already, was a reseller also! :/
So I found out that theplanet.com seems to be the real web host with the actual servers physically in their possession. And hostgator.com was basically reselling from theplanet.com. And I'm pretty sure that arvixe.com is a reseller of one of them or maybe a reseller of a reseller of one of these resellers o.O ?
So, eventhough I'm really poor I used my little checking card, that I can use as a credit card eventhough it's not really a credit card, to sign up with hostgator for the $34.95/mo. plan. And from their web site they recommended a few ways to accept payment and I signed up with 2checkout.com.
This was all within the past two days. And I was all happy bragging to my boyfriend who barely knows how to even run an anti-virus program, that I was going have my own web hosting company!
So, then I checked out some more stuff and by the way 2checkout.com made me sign up with them for like $49 setup fee and they take out 5.5% and $0.45 per whatever you sell. So I did this all for under $100 or so and feeling pretty smart. Then I tried to set up my payment script using 2checkout's info they gave me. I had a question and I couldn't even find a way to contact them. No support@... or anything. I had to fill out a 'support ticket' and all I got was a automated email and well that gave me time to think about how shadey they seem and maybe this isn't a great idea after all. Then I was looking at findmyhost.com and seeing how basically they are almost all resellers and some are probably resellers of resellers! Anyways, this was going to be a lot more work for basically nothing and all I'd get back was maybe my money I put into it back and then I'd be answering support emails from anybody unfortunate enough to sign up for my hosting services o.O BECAREFUL WHO YOU HOST YOUR WEB SITE WITH!
So, I went back to looking at hostgator's other regular webhosting plans and they had one for like $10/mo. and that sounded ok to me with decent stuff. So I sent them an email to downgrade my $34.95/mo plan to a regular $9.95/mo plan and they sent me an email back saying that to downgrade it'd cost me an extra $10 downgrade fee -.-
So, I sent an email back because I looked on their site and they said they have a 30-day money back guarantee so I want to just cancel my hosting with them and get back my money. The alternative is to pay $34.95 + $10.00 + $9.95...to downgrade! And I sent an email to 2checkout to also try and refund my money but eventhough their website says it. all I've ever gotten from them was automated reply emails after filling out 'tickets'.
I was looking at theplanet's stuff and their dedicated $249/mo. plan seems ok but I don't know If I want to invest that much just for a 'fun' project that at best I'd only make my money back or maybe some more...but thats doubtful.
So, I'm cutting my loses and I'm glad I just won't be billed for all that stuff again next month even if they don't ever refund me. But now I don't have a host yet anywhere for my little domains but I'll find one eventually maybe. And while I was throwing my CC around the internet I impulsively came to this site because I've thought about signing up a few times and even got to the paypal form but never clicked the final button...but this time I did and now at least for $100 + the gamedev fees (like $14) I'll get a place to rant and my very own avatar! (I'm going to try and screen capture the purple headed girl from my SNES emu Final Fantasy V now. ^_^)
Oh, also I sometimes come here and read the newbie forums and I hope to make a game one day :p
