A copy of a copy

I finally got shader instancing working... took me long enough. This really helped me solidfy a few things, shaders for example. I am really excited about hardware instancing, too bad I dont have the 600 to shell out for a card that supports VS3.0. I figure might as well wait for longhorn to come out and before getting new hardware.

Rays of Hope

Yay, I got a finally got around to starting some ray tracing (yea I am following a raytracing book and no I am not sure at how they are deriving this magic formulas).

I am not sure why its displaying as source code...

A good book (the one I following anyway): Realistic Ray Tracing

Odd Findings

I recently got 3d studios 7, what a great program. Anways I was following the tutorial at tutorialized on how to create a car tire rim, it turned out pretty well (for a programmer xD).

I ended up with 14555 triangles for a single car tire rim, I simply slapped on a texture, exported to directX. Then I threw it into my test bed, rendering the whole thing (no culling) each frame. The problem/oddity that it grinds the framerate to a halt.

I was testing with a radeon 9600, using the simple LPD3DXMESH to handle the loading and rendering of the xfile. If I only render the gui and text I am able to get 1033 FPS. If I render my terrain (which is 65025 verticies) as well as the gui, I am getting over 150 FPS.

Clearly the 'car tire rim' is unusable, but I wouldnt have thought that there would have been that signifcant a drop in the framerate.

The answer is the same as usual, more investagation/testing is needed. Though if anyone can help me expediate the process that would great.

EI EIO

I recently acquired 3d studio max, its an amazing modeling program. So far I can create an amazing twisted wall. I can export these great models into the x-file format and bring them into my game... xD

I am looking for any good models. This is Exciting... indeed

FMod

Today I downloaded FMOD, to see whats everyone taking about. So far it seems like a rather good sound rendering api.

I have written basic classes to handle mp3, wav and wav3d before... but this crossplatform and done properly.

Loads mp3s, wavs, wav3d and a whole bunch of things. Its nice and easy to use and the documentation is fantastic. Two thumbs up.

Kit kat bar

I was starting to work with index buffers today. All I wanted to do was create a few quads with them (nothing special). After a good while having no success, tearing out my hair and wondering why something so simple is giving me so much problems.

I decided to take a break and go have super, during the course of the meal: it hits me (I was using D3DFMT_INDEX16 for index buffers and locking it using an interger array -- which of course is wrong on a 32 bit machine).

An important lesson is to take breaks every once and awhile, it just might help.

Floatin

I am house sititng for my dads, he is an audiophile. There is nothing like listening to good music on a kick ass system while consuming large quanities of beer --everything being relative (four for me).

What does a man who recently lost his mother in a freak canoe accident eat, you ask. A rather good question I reply.

The answer is: Cheerios/Life Cerial (and milk), bagles and peanut butter. Without the barbacue I would surely perish...

Shadow of the Colossus

This my friends looks like an amazing game, the shaders (if thats what they used look incrediable).

Marching Forward

###
On July 1st 2005 my mother went to the cottage. She went for a canoe ride, but never came back. The police speculate that she drowned in the lake. Its been over four months now and they still havent found her body.

###
My moms will: it says something to the effect; the house, cottage and everything else is to go to my brother and I. Of that all my brother and I want is to keep the house, the problem is that XYZ (the person who my mom was living with-- but not married to) has other ideas.

So what I am trying to determine is if I should simply try and take it via Lawyers... even if we ended up with nothing, XYZ will still be in a worse position, as he has no pension and is 49?. OR Simply broker a deal in which we give him some precentage of the house. Either way it sucks.

If it was only my descision I would let the lawyers battle it out, but I have to think about my brother. The person who was supposed to handle all of this, my Uncle -- is simply too far away and too busy, so my Grandfather is handling it, hes 84+ years old.

The other problem is that this is taking so long, we cant sell the house before we get a death certificate (which could take up to 7 years). The worst thing of all is the police might not ever find the body (they cant search in the winter), there is only one boat with the special equipment, so if a more recent drowning happens they have to go there.

Text to voice

https://www.gamedev.net/reference/articles/article1904.asp

Microsoft has a Text to voiceAPI. I think it could be keen, if the voices could be saved as wav. Then manipulated with directSound, which allows you to add sound effects like echo, gargle and so forth, ultimately which could mean realtime dynamic voices.

Hohum

Recently I bought a few games for my console, which include: The Hulk, Xman2 Apocalypse, an evil dead game, and a samuari jack game.

Hulk has amazing physics, for the first hour or so I was simply blown away. The first few missions of Hulk seemed to be too unfocused. There is one part of the game where you have to protect a building from tanks (hey if I wanted to play a Turret Defence I would play starcraft). Maybe its just me.. but I want to play Hulk wheres hes simply smashing, destroying something similar to the arcarde games: simpsons arcade, cadillacs and dinasours, turtles and time, etc... Not to say I wont give it another go later on.

Samuari Jack is neat, and has a nice cartoon renderer, but I thought there could have been a better story (there didnt seem to be any).

All of these games seem to be mindbogglingly good games, the problem I find with them seems to be with the gameplay.

###
Edit:
I am working on a particle engine for my game, and once again rebuilding the whole framework from scratch.

The first post got deleted by mistake, oh well...

I really like the idea of using Abstract base classes

I am toying with the idea of using an empty struct, and then deriving all of my structs from it. The purpose is to avoid having functions that take a google and half paramters.

Horray for today

About three months ago my mom passed away, she drowned in a lake. To make a long story short, they (the police) might not ever find her body. This has slown down my production of my game, not that it was really going very fast to begin with.

I do have enough books that I can get started. Its just that I have been dabbling in this and that without much focus, therefore I dont have much to show (which I link with a lack of motivation to work on it). I am now going to build each component until its done rather then skipping from subject to subject...

I am starting to make a particle system. I am going to base it off of these sources...
